I believe I have referenced this coin correctly, but the examples I have been able to find look somewhat different. Any assistance will be appreciated Philip I Antoninianus OBV: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate draped bust right REV: FIDES EXERCITVS, four standards Struck at Antioch, year unknown RIC 84 (Seller's images) The seller had it completely mis-attributed
Correct. RIC IV 84; Bland 24. Struck AD 247-248. http://ettuantiquities.com/Philip_1/Philip1-Bland-list.htm
The standards are a bit thicker and squatter than what I've seen on this reverse type, but that's likely just a particular engraver's variation on the theme. The bust is Philip I all the way.
Thanks for the confirmation Ard. I was fairly certain I was correct, but the images I found, even on your link, look different. Especially the standards on the reverse.
Lol true. Once you see it, you cannot take your eyes off the little guy! And people thought the movie Happy Feet was an original screenplay.....
Hmmm.... Sorry to say but that look very much like a lipanoff fake... http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?pos=-10556
I agree with Bill, wonderful catch. Sorry about that Bing. I know its unfair to you Dionysus, but I didn't "like" your post since I feel so bad for Bing.
The obv. is somewhat different. Here's another more convincing imo... http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?pos=-6399
Well, well. Thanks Batman. I purchased this from a dealer I have done business with in the past so I was lazy and didn't do any checking of the fakes databases. I have written the seller requesting to cancel the purchase and I provided him the two links above to the known fakes. Now I have to wait to see what the dealer has to say. It's too bad. I really liked the coin and the little penguin, but not enough to keep a fake at that price. Once again, thanks for catching this.
I recognised it when I saw the first image. It may be a shame but it is better to catch it now. Regards, Martin
I really feel for you Bing, especially after that Vahran II of mine had to go back. Like you I would have kept it for a price, but not nearly what I had paid for it. Lucky for you that you bought it from a dealer. Mine was shipped back a week ago and the Ebay seller has not yet signed for it.
That really sucks, Bing. I feel for ya. I could have been fooled by that coin as well. Hopefully you get your money refunded.
We'll see what kind of response I get, but he has a satisfaction guarantee. I'm trying to catch it before he mails the coin out. That will not only save time, but save me the postage to return it. Thanks for the sympathy and solidarity, but I really liked that coin. :so-sad:
Oh, I will. Just the threat of exposure would probably be enough. But I think the dealer will do the right thing without any threats.
Its why every purchase only goes on a credit card, (even through Paypal). It gives you a mighty big stick to wield if you ever need it.
