Since two-reale coins were forerunners of our quarter dollar, I consider this one of the very first quarters. I bought it at a coin show last Saturday. Someone said vintage quarters have become popular ever since statehood quarters came out. I use a library computer so I can't upload a photo, so I provided the link. You can enlarge it when you get to it.

    Couple old quarters

These are nothing compared to your beautiful 2R but you have provided me with an opportunity to post my "old quarters". I got these two raw & on-the-cheap about a month ago.

The Nabataeans were the first (known) culture to put denominations on coins. These were the first quarters in history, dating somewhere between 1 and 18 AD.

Was the denomination of that coin equivalent to a quarter?

Yes. In fact, the Aramaic inscription on the reverse says "quarter".
