So some of the 5-Star General coins were made using the old techniques. Article says the old technique coins won't be released. Anyone think some of them will escape???

Oddly enough that is the same complaint made against the laser frosting technique, that it destroys detail.

As for their images, they look more like the old standby, artists renditions, not photos of actual pieces. Also even with real coins lighting differences can account for a a big difference in appearance as well.

Interesting Green, but its all computerized now. No room for the artist, anyone can now make a die.

I liked how that eagle looked and lord knows i wont pass up an opportunity to own a couple of those coming out. Might convince a few in my family to buy 2 each as well.

First major highly collectible (vs the 5 star generals) coin with a new feature, only offered for one month, yadda, yadda, the hype and conditions certainly seem to be there for a nice score like the 96's or any of the other major Eagle sets that went for moon money. Im on this bandwagon for sure, they definitely marketed this right to the dummies like me.

I'd be interested to see an in-hand comparison of the two different techniques. It sounds like the 5-star general coins are only going to be issued with the new technique but I think I might try and get a hold of the new ASE and compare it to a previous year.

Does anyone know when the new ASE goes on sale?

Wonder where some people will obtain a "touch up laser" for artistic license on eBay.

Supposedly not, they said they wont release the Generals made the old way, just the new ones. Although I would still check, you never know with the mint, they are just as likely to put a handful in 'circulation' on purpose to further the flames of collecting (and thus their profits!)

May only I believe, or maybe May and June, but not for very long from what i can remember.

I don't see how that would make them a profit. These coins will probably sell out for the price they are asking. If there is a variety it will make people money on the secondary market...the mint will see none of those profits. The reason they would release them is so they don't have to invest any more capital into destroying the examples they made and making more with the new technique.

Is there going to be 2 proof ASEs this year then...one with the original technique and one with the laser or will all be with the laser? The reason I ask is they are taking orders for 2013 proof ASEs online already with an unlimited production run.

I was under the impression that they were only going to be using this 'enhanced' technique for the special set during this limited offering. IDK though, if i had to guess I would say this year they will do the special set, then next year fully transition over to the new enhanced coins, but thats just my guess and obviously not helping you.

That is a VERY good and valid point though. Im still leaning towards them issuing both coins this year, so it may be prudent to order a proof and an enhanced this year, those transition coins usually do good on premiums. You know the whole 'I got the first year issue of this one and the last year issue of this particular type, yadda, yadda'

To your other question about increase in profits. If they let loose a couple of the regular generals when they werent supposed to, it will just spur more people buying the other products or even more generals in hopes of scoring a non released proof coin. Plus if they keep making 'mistakes' by releasing coins that werent intended for the general public, people keep buying in hope 'they' will be the next 'lucky one'

I'm trying to find official mention of this "special ASE set" but I can't seem to find it. All I see is this: http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ctId=16932&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10120

While I understand what you are saying...I think this "laser design" alone will be enough for the 5-star proofs to sell out. Therefore, I don't think that this set in particular has anything to gain from an "accidental" release of traditionally produced coins. Other than the mint not having to use more money destroying those examples and minting more laser examples.

I'll have to see them in hand before I can tell.

I believe the "enhanced" ASE in the set is technically supposed to be an Uncirculated coin, not a proof. So the only two proofs will be the regular unlimited proof and the RP in the set.

My point was also along the line of, and we both know there are collectors out there like this who wont use logic...like this....

"well honey the mint made a mistake and dropped some coins into circulation that were never meant to leave the US Mint, now give me the credit card so I can buy these Girl Scout Commems and get rich off of finding their mistake"

only you could just as easily substitute ASEs or whatever else they may make with this new technology.

Admittedly it was kind of a tongue and cheek comment on how the mint is always up to something to keep the masses coming back for more and charging us higher and higher prices to do so.

I’m interested to see how consistent the different layers frosting will remain through the life of the dies. Either way, it opens up a whole new set of possibilities, especially for new designs. I would love to see an enhanced, super detailed P Puck on the ATB’s.

Indeed, dear Traci, I must protest. The level of creativity is boundless. John Mercanti much appreciates the new wave of things. The newer technique will allow artists to be more expressive in their endeavor.

Wow you guys get up late. I didn't see any replies to this posting till now......:)
