I do not know if it has been stated or not but regardless of your standing in this relationship. it is imperative that you tell this lady that the longer she waits, the more chance she has of losing $6,000.
That is all you can do at this point but it seems to me that a certain "urgency" has not been conveyed with regard to this receipt. Certainkly it cannot be THAT difficult to locate and if it is, then she can probably just kiss her money goodbye.

I hate to come off sounding calloused but she does not appear to have assigned this situation any importance.

I've followed this thread since the very beginning. I have simply chosen to not make any inane, redundant, rhetorical posts as most have said all there is to say. Isn't the husband more likely to notice the missing money as more and more time elapses?

If you are painting and you notice you messed up, do you let the paint dry before coming back to touch it up, especially if you want it to not be noticed?? No! You do it right away while the original mix of paint is wet. Once it dries you may never match that blend of color.

Just as any claim she may have been able to make is more than likely dried up. Especially with the falling price of silver, this is
reminiscent of that Judge Judy episode with that Jules fellow recently dug up somewhere here on CT.....

Has anyone ever even called the coin shop to express their dissatisfaction yet?

To an observer (or Judge) who doesn't know (or care to listen to) every little detail of this event, it looks much more like an investor angry about a losing investment.

I have had the benefit of reading the whole story as you have told it; a mediating party may not, and this will affect the outcome if it goes to mediation.

Please don't assume I'm late to the party; I've just been a wallflower till now. :)

Sounds like a marriage issue and not a money issue.

I sincerely hope she can provide you with that receipt Big Ed. I'm beginning to have my doubts.......

Why does it have to be missing? My Mom was an artist who did all of her own framing and mat & glass cutting. The members of the art leagues she belonged to were always bringing their paintings to her because she charged less than even the do-it-yourself shops. On one occasion, I happened to be rummaging through the cabinet where Mom kept her purse and I came across an envelope with $14,000 in cash in it. "Mom, what the heck are you doing with all this cash in here?" Her reply? "That's my mad money!"

That might not be 100% accurate. Florida has some unique laws when it comes to senior citizens. Remember, Florida is a huge retirement state...they have many many senior citizens living there. As a result, they have some laws on the books that give them a little more protection. While I tend to normally agree with the statement you made...she might want to consult a lawyer.

Yes, perhaps she should consult with a lawyer and find out what her best options are.

If she hasn't taken advantage of free help why would you think that she would pay for help?

Perhaps she is a ditzy old lady who can't formulate a plan of action on her own.

I believe that BigEd has already stated that the lady and her husband have "different" banking accounts. He'll never know that she is short 8 grand.

Sadly, this thread has failed to deliver. 26 pages and still at square one and no one has even gone and talked to the dealer. Why start a thread then if no action was planned to be taken for weeks after? Should have waited till the entire story played out and then come on and tell the story.

Yes, let's close this thread, mods. Any sympathy or interest this community has seems to be long gone (mine included).

Is this in some way hurting you? Just don't read it. If you feel compelled to read it, don't comment. Now problem solved. How many problems could we solve this way...now I think I will hunt for Detecto's latest thread. :)

I, for one, am still an optimist... I am still hoping that she will produce the receipt and the situation can some how be rectified.

The effect of denial is varied widely with each person, and I believe that the denial is VERY strong with this lady. And it ain't just a river in Egypt...

Can we give her a name? After all, it has been many, many pages, and we all feel like we know her (even a little bit...). I would like to call her Emma...

So, Emma may have some shame about the issue or just may believe that if she does not talk about it, that it will go away.

Hey, biged, is there any chance that you or someone you know could visit this shop and pretend you are going to buy some silver? This person could even say that Emma got such a great deal, that they were wondering if there was more of those coins that were available. Just thinking out loud, and trying to burn up a few weeks time 'til you get the receipt.

27 pages, 390+ posts have gotten us nowhere. Biged asks for understanding yet has not delivered anything beyond empty promises. We've hashed his one sided myoptic postings so much that there is no meat on the bone. If he is retired he sure missed his true calling as a script writer on one of the soap operas.

His woman friend (friend of his wife) sure must be rich because by BigEd's postings she is flighty and self serving who doesn't mind deceiving her husband about how she loses the marriage's money. I wonder if she had lost money that she had to go out and earn would she be more thrifty and concerned.

I truely feel that she complained to BigEd's wife so she could show off to her how much money she could lose without suffering any repercussions or sense of loss. We are asked to show this lame brained individual some compassion when she would do the same for herself.

The woman doesn't deserve help because she doesn't help herself. She probably has been catered to all her life and thinks that this problem will somewhow miracle itself away.

Your compassion touches my soul. I recommend you quit reading this or your loss of tears might cause you to dehydrate.

Glad you at least came back to say something. I'd be ok if you didn't come back at all, as that's your prerogative but unfortunately sometimes when you start a thread on a forum some people can't handle it, as I'm sure you have learned. I hope things work out for you and your friend. Also, I hope the coin dealer gets what is coming to him plus a good slappin' around. :D
