Now for the next coin! Keep in mind about low quality scanner photos. Claudius AE Quadrans. 41-54 AD, 3.6g, 17mm OBV: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG Around modius. REV: PON M TR P IMP COS DES IT around large S dot C. REF: RIC 84, Cohen 70. There it is. Sorry John Anthony, I'm going for RIC 84. I know it's hard to tell what the legend is at the top but I looked at it really closely in a photo and with a magnifying glass.
I have a similar Claudius Quadran, but I have it attributed as RIC 90 OBV: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG - Modius REV: PON M TR P IMP P P COS II - Large S C 2.6g, 16mm
Birthday?? I love birthdays. Just consider the alternative. Is it really your b-day? If so, I hope you had a good one.
It really is my birthday for real. I had a damn good one too. New coins arrived in the mail today. Posted a ton. Watched episode #9 Spartacus War of the Damned. The end is near! I can't wait until Sunday when the next episode of Game of Thrones comes on.
Trajan AE Quadrans. 98-117 AD, 3.5g, 17mm OBV: IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG. Laureate head right, slight drapery on far shoulder. REV: She-wolf crouching left, SC in ex. REF: RIC II 694, BMCRE 1061, Cohen 340. For this one, the scanner didn't really do a good job on it. It looks better in hand. I really like this coin as well. I know Steve likes it since it has a animal on the reverse. lol
Great lookin' coins and big-time Milestone (congrats!!) ... Yup, I love that show as well (Series 3, episode #2 => Bring It!!)
Severus II Follis. Siscia, 306-307 AD, 1.7g, 18mm OBV: SEVERVS NOB C, Laureate head right. REV: GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left, modius on head, with chlamys over left shoulder, holding patera and cornucopiae; SIS in ex. REF: RIC 171a Yes, another low grade coin but kind of strange since the reverse design looks kind of lop-sided as it was engraved. Also, I'm getting closer to getting one of each ruler in the Tetrarchy era. The easiest and most common one left is Galeria Valeria. The others are as follows. Romulus - Son of Maxentius. Difficult, but not impossible. Impossible rulers: Domitius Domitianus - Need at least a grand. Alexander Tyrannus - Impossible Martinian - Impossible Wikipedia Copy and Paste.
I think the reverse looks lopsided because the mint mark wasn't punched into the dies directly below Genius.
Nero. AD 54-68. AE As, Rome mint. 63 AD. 6.8g, 23.50mm OBV: NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP PP, Laureate head right. REV: GENIO AVGVSTI, S-C across fields, I in exergue, Genius standing left, holding patera and cornucopiae, sacrificing over lighted altar to left. REF: RIC I 214; Sear 1977; WCN 269; BMC 252. This one here was barely identifiable to a RIC ID, took awhile too but I got it. Like I said, I know this is low-grade, but hey, I only paid $7 for it so I'm not complaining any at all. Wikipedia Copy and Paste
Philip I AE As. 244-249 AD, 8.2g, 24mm OBV: IMP M IVL PHILLIPVS AVG, Laureate, draped & cuirassed bust right. REV: LAET FVNDAT S-C, Laetitia standing left on prow with patera & rudder. REF: RIC 176b, Cohen 76. I'm going to be giving this coin a BD treatment here soon. I need to get some distilled water because I ran out the last time I was doing it. Wikipedia Copy and Paste
You ain't seen nothing yet! lol This is just a warm up. Maybe in a week or so, I'll be posting 16 more coins!
Marcus Aurelius, Denarius. 172-173 AD, 3.2g, 18mm OBV: M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXVII, Laureate head right. REV: IMP VI COS III, Emperor standing left holding branch and sceptre. REF: RIC 282, Cohen 305 I just got that lot of 16 coins in. Some are low grade, some fairly decent but I like them all. This is the first out of 16 coins. I've had some difficulty attributing this coin to catalog so if you guys would be so kind as to check for me I would appreciate it. Mainly because the obverse legend, I can't tell what the last couple of letters would be in AVG TR P XXVII. That's what I'm guessing it could be. There is barely enough room to fit all that in there. It's cold here up north and it's making me tired so I will take a nap and post more later. Enjoy!
Hadrian AR Denarius., 117-138 AD, 3.1g, 18mm OBV: HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS, Laureate head right, slight drapery on left shoulder. REV: COS III, Pudicitia standing left, covering face with veil. REF: RIC 176, RSC 392.
Sabina denarius. 117-238 AD, 2.0g, 16mm OBV: SABINA AVGVSTA, Diademed and draped bust right, hair in queue down neck. REV: IVNONI REGINAE, Juno standing left holding patera and sceptre. REF: RIC 395a, RSC 43, Sear (RCV 2000) 3921, BMC 940 This one is really low grade and will be upgraded at some point in the future.
