With silver $8.00 oz., what's the melt value of dime, qtr, half rolls?

I understand that pre-1965 U.S. dimes, quarters and halves contain 90% silver. One local dealer quoted me his "buy" prices at "3-4-5 x (times) face" rates. How many ounces of pure silver would be contained in a dime, a quarter and a half roll respectively? (Sorry, but it's been awhile since I studied grams and ounces equations, so I'm a little rusty.)What would be a good price for me to sell them to him using his face value offers should I decide to let them go? All the rolls are BU 1960-1964, and I thought for example that Franklin Halves would be worth more than Kennedy ones. This dealer made no price distinction on his buy rates.

Okay here is a quick break down of how we (dealers) buy silver. It is based on $1000 bags of 90% silver. Anything dated 1964 and before. Usually BU coins are not sold as melt. So based on silver content, it doesn't matter what coins make up the bag. As long as it is silver. The most common bags are half dollar bags. Mixed with Walkers, Franklins, and 1964 Kennedy's. The equation is roughly 715 ounces per bag. So multiply that time current spot and you get the numbers. Example silver at $8.10 X 715 = 5791 a bag roughly. Now most dealers will sell at a small fee above this melt price, and buy at levels below melt. Can be around $250 either way. I hope that helps.

I don't think that was quite the answer he was looking for Nd. Not too many people have have a $1,000 face value worth of silver coins.

So let's try this way - a silver half dollar has .36 oz of silver. So if silver is at $8 - then .36 x 8 = $2.88 - or about 5.5 times face value.

    A silver quarter has .18 oz of silver - so .18 x 8 = $1.44 - or about 5.75 times face value.

    A silver dime has .07 oz of silver - so .07 x 8 = $0.56 - or 5.6 times face value.

So for an average - let's say the rate is 5.5 times face if silver is $8 oz. So if a dealer offers 5 times face - that's a pretty fair deal.

    dsmith23 Gotta get 'em all

There is no way to know what the started date was, I use the recent threads on the right side of the page. There really is no need to comment on a thread that hasn't been active in 9 years.

At first I was wondering why anyone would be asking to price silver at $8/oz, then I noticed the date. What a great thread to bump! A really cool blast from the past!
