Today's new get is an upgrade of a note I had in VF, to this nice AU or higher. This 1944 Greek 100 Drachma note is one of the first post occupation notes and it's a great design. The front has Miss Greece 2008 on it, while the reverse has a great engraving of an angel or winged goddess the provenance of which I cannot determine (you know how many hits you get on Greece winged goddess sculpture???). The blue color and reverse engraving are what got me interested on this one, so interested I wanted a really nice example. Got the new note for the same as the old one, so happy to go up in quality but not in price.
Today's new get is a nice crisp 1961 Egyptian 10 Pound note, alot of great detail on the front, and with King Tut, how can you go wrong? Note is a biggun as well, very large...
Okay, so it figures that as soon as I get a "placeholder", I actually get the note I wanted in it's place, so here it is, a very nice XF of this note in a better year even, 1942 instead of 1947, and looking great. Really like the scene on the Nile on the front with the camel, and the back color is vivid and very pleasing. Last Egypt for a little while but I have a couple new pickups that just came in or are coming in, new countries altogether and great examples of older ones too, so stay tuned...
And today's new note is a fantastic remainder from Costa Rica, I plan to get quite the collection of these notes as they have beautiful vignettes and scenes that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Costa Rica... This crisp note has a African Lion which as we know is an indigenous species to Costa Rica, it is positively overrun with them. You have to think the folks who ordered this didn't really want images of malarial jungles and native tribes that lived in huts and ate each other. They likely said "Hey ABCNo, give us notes with some cool $h!+ on them..." And so they did. Great engraving and subtle color makes this a rich note. The back has engraving very poker chip like (boy I'd kill to get one of those...). Enjoy! A new country entirely tomorrow, first ever from this one, you will want to "check" it out (I am oh so witty...)
I almost spelled it like that Funkee, but I couldn't be completely blatant... And without further ado, here's my first Czechoslovakia note - 100 Korun note from the brief period of democratic self rule of Czechoslovakia after World War II, before the communist putsch that installed permanent communist rule until the fall of communism in 1989. Love the richness of this note, has an almost Velvet Elvis look to the front. The first president of Czechoslovakia is on the front, and the famous Charles bridge is on the back with the Prague Castle in the background - this is a very common feature of many Czech notes and tourist photos everywhere. An opportunity presented itself to get this note at a really nice price, and I am glad it did, great looking note...
I picked up this 2006A $100 High Number Mini Ladder Radar Serial earlier this week for about $40 over face... I like the note and the price.
Today's new pickup is a neat historical item, not even sure the best term to describe it, perhaps a promissory note issued to a member of the Continental Army from Connecticut for nine pounds and nine shillings. I saw this and thought it was really neat, so I took a shot and got it. Back shows several iterations of interest payment on the note. Obviously kept for a long time, the constant folding and unfolding of the weak paper got to the point they sewed it back together - no tape for you! This is not uncommon on these notes and it's contemporary to the time, so it's not like someone did this a few years back, nope, that note got sewed in 1780 something... neat piece of history methinks.
$2 Bill My latest addition to my new $2 bill collection that I picked up at auction yesterday. There were some others but the prices got too high, unfortunately.
Keemao, I am jealous, that note is on my get list BAD, I am trying to get my silvers in Lyons Treat and the deuce is hard to find. I sure hope that wasn't an eBay get... Okay, putting my note jealousy aside, let's see today's new pickup shall we? This is a nice Scotland bank note, the front has nice design elements and great bright colors. On closer look though, it appears to be a boar and a sheep dry humping a coat of arms. Interesting... of course, the Scots are known for their love of sheep. So much so it caused the Rolling Stones to pen those famous lyrics, "Hey, McCloud, get off of my ewe..." Thanks folks, I'm here all week, try the veal... Have to be honest, the reverse design is a real let down to me, the scene very much has a high school art final look to it, not like the really dramatic reverses of so many other notes. Enh, still like it as the front is the real star here.
So here's the other new Czech note I got, and unlike the first one which was during the very early free period post WW2, this one is from the communist period, as evidenced by the two manly dudes on the front who just love working menially as subsistence farmers on huge agricultural collectives in service to the all important state, hopes and liberty be damned. They liked it so much they tried to be rid of it until the Soviets rolled in tanks in 1968. The reverse is again a nice engraving of the Charles Bridge and Prague castle, really nice wide view of it there. To the guy on the front, I have two words - nice hat.
So what is up today? How about a little Japanese Invasion Money? I have always liked these notes, the design elements were heavily pilfered from US designs, obviously to make them more palatable to the new captive subjects. Didn't really work out, but... I really like the Rizal monument in the design, it may have been enemy money from a barbaric regime, but they made some nice occupation notes... I am really gunning for the 500 peso note.
Another day, another mid-Atlantic national acquisition. PCGS VF35 1929 $100 Baltimore, right margin is trimmed mighty tight. Interesting story, I tracked this same note from an old Heritage auction from 2011. Let's just say I bought it for 2/3 what it sold back in 2011. Enjoy guys!
Here's the other JIM note I got, again with the Rizal monument on the front and the very BEP layout especially on the numbers and flourishes - the five is so close to the US $5 numerals I always do a double take... Shameless plug - I actually ended up with several of all of these in uncirculated condition, only keeping the two I posted, anyone who wants them I can let you get them cheap, as in like $3 shipped for both cheap... end plug! Gonna mix it up over the next few days, got new notes, new countries, old countries... just trying to keep it fresh as I spend my kids inheritance.
that lion is so cool and the reverse 5's are cool. how much do these go for ? you're gonna make me want to get this 1 because i love world coins with lions on them. this lion note would be a nice addition to those lion coins.
