Look at JA's Bele- you know its not the size of the coin but the jingle in the pocket that counts.

Interesting. Coins in Lydia started the same way. They never saw them before because they are about the size of a grain of sand, but now they have found ancient electrum coins about 3-4mm.

Oh man, this thread definitely gave me a laugh!

I do like these Ptolemaic Kingdom coins though. Although, how do they date them since the obverse portrait is largely the same? Is it just the reverse legend?

Believe me I am by no means an expert on these but I wonder the same thing. If you look at the whole series you see differences in devices between the legs and to the right of the eagle. There are coins with the eagle looking a different direction or there are two eagles.

I believe the bulk of these are all within about 100 years of each other. The particulars of which I am only now becoming familiar with.

I have noticed that as well, although I thought that it might be more of an indicator of denomination but I don't know. I haven't really done any research on it, just looked at them :p

Ask and ye shall receive. This is the website of the guy who is working with Cathy Lorber on the forthcoming corpus of Ptolemaic coins. http://www.megagem.com/ancient/ptolemy_series.html
