I was going to hold off a bit on new coins, but couldn't pass on this one. Constans AE Centenionalis. D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG, pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right, A behind bust / FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO, soldier spearing fallen horseman who is in a Phrygian helmet, sitting on ground, arms up, A to left, dot ASIS dot in ex. RIC VIII Siscia 254, rated C2.
wow, that's a nice: "horseman that has fallen and is now trying to defend himself against an enemy with a pointy spear" ... I still haven't bought myself an example, yet
Here's my best falling horseman, on an issue of Constantius Gallus. It arrived in the mail today. I've really got to be more careful about keeping track of what I've ordered, because I thought this coin was already in my box of Romans. Turns out it was making a long trek from down-under, and when it arrived today, I was surprised to get a coin...
Steve? I hope that raccoon is drinking scotch. Pointy spear and an 'ouchy' but a nice classical pickup (addition) by dear Randy.......
Recently Randy posted a thread with his new PARL and the one he traded to someone I know (me) so I'll add here my new PARL which does not by any means replace the one that was once Randy's but is an additional coin nicer in some ways and short in the most important one. This new coin has great surfaces but was double struck so there is additional forehead detail floating in the portrait as well as mush where the left legend should be. Ther reverse is nice save for an mushy extra horse head just left of the good one and the big problem to me: The rump of the horse is flat with no Christmas balls which I consider important on a PARL coin. Still it is a nice coin and odd enough that no one outbid me on eBay so it cost about the same as the postage (from the UK). It is not a Bridgnorth Hoard coin (the surfaces are nicer than on my coin from that hoard). I like odd coins and this doublestrike bothers me less than what I saved in terms of price from a perfectly struck coin otherwise the same.
Nice! It looks much better than the sellers pic. Glad you won it. It looks quite large, whats the diameter?
As Randy showed by his question, it is possible to pick up on a millimeter of two difference from a photo that has no scale. IMHO the AE2 coins are easily worth double the AE3 ones (but the AE3 ones are worth very little unless EF). The Horsemen are very common coins with an estimated (By Dane) 2200 variations. Included in those 2200 are a few I consider very special including most or all AE2 coins from western mints. I don't have a perfect one of any of them but am happy to have the varied lower grade ones I have been lucky to find at prices I can afford.
It seems that prices vary as much as the coins do. In general I like the largest ones the most, but there are some quite nice ,smaller ones.
