Finally decided to post a Julia Mamaea I picked up back in Long Beach this past feb. Ive been lazy to post it. What attracted me to it was its weight, nice portrait, and the die clash on the reverse. Plus it was only $40! Julia Mamaea (222 - 235 A.D.) AR Denarius O: IVLIA MAMAEA AVG, Diademed and draped bust right. R:VENVS GENETRIX, Venus standing left, head left, holding scepter and apple; at feet to left, Cupid standing right with hands raised. Rome 3.6g 20mm RIC 355 (Severus Alexander), RSC 072
That's a nice looking Denarius, Mat. There is nothing wrong with the obverse, but you are correct about the reverse. It makes this coin stand out. I just recently posted my latest Julia Mamaea, so I will post my only other one. AR Denarius OBV: IVLIA MAMAEA AVG, draped bust right REV: IVNO CONSERVATRIX, Juno standing left, holding patera & scepter, peacock at feet left Struck at Rome, 222 AD 3.3g, 20mm RIC 343
Definitely a nice coin! Here is my Julia Mamaea Julia Mamaea AR Denarius, 3.1g, 19mm OBV: IVLIA MAMAEA AVG, Diademed, draped bust right, hair in horizontal waves. REV: FECVND AVGVSTAE, Fecunditas standing half-left, holding hand over child and cornucopiae, child standing right before, lifting up arms. REF: RIC 331, RSC 5, BMC 917, RCV 8207
I'd like to find a VF Julia Mamea Bostra provincial bronze - head of Zeus/Ammon on the reverse. They're somewhat scarce. There's one on eBay now for a reasonable price in almost-F, but I'm holding out for a better coin.
Good eye, identifying it as a die clash. I know a lot of numismatists who would erroneously call that, "overstruck on a brockage."
I think ive mentioned it before but if I wasnt into ancients I would focus on collecting only die clashes. Whether its on ancients, world or u.s. I love them & have many in all areas. My recent Maesa in Nov. has it on the reverse with the oberve MAE. showing. M is hard to see in photo. But I have noticed there is alot of maesas with die clashing. Seemed to be the norm I guess. I just dont see letters as often as I do the head. Plus the coin was $20 BIN, couldnt resist it for that price even though I didnt need her.
