I think this is an excellent addition to my late Roman Imperial collection (Valentinian I and after), which I am focusing on. Got it from a forum member. Great details for something so small (12/13 mm)!

    Obv: DN THEODO-SIVS PF AVG
Rev: VICTORI-A AVGGG, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm, Gamma SIS dot in ex, Siscia mint

Surprisingly these are my photos! I'm trying a new set-up.

This is exactly the type of coin that I suggest every beginning collector seek out. The only reason advanced collectors might want to avoid it is that they already have one or a dozen like it. I'd certainly buy it if I came upon it at a show and it looked as good as your photo!

A wonderful coin! Excellent, but inexpensive, coins like this are one reason I recommend collecting late Roman coins. You can buy pleasing coins of numerous interesting emperors rather cheaply. The history is fascinating. This site:

shows what is available and recommends reference works for the history. Don't forget your public library (or university library) when seeking historical reference works.

Thanks Warren. That page has helped me a lot and it should be referenced by every new collector.

I agree. I wish I had followed the same advice when getting into ancients.

New guys, I KNOW, (believe me), that its tempting to buy "uncleaned coins". It simply is a waste of money. Buy coins like this, coins you will always appreciate as a coin. Its really cheaper in the long run than buying "floor sweepings". Trust me, ESPECIALLY nowadays, any "uncleaned coins" you get off of Ebay are simply junk coins that its not worth spending $1 on to clean. The people who sort these know MUCH MORE about them than most collectors ever will.

Nice, clean little coin there VK. :)

I have a couple of coins from Theodosius I but they are not as nice as yours.

I'm compelled to compliment the quality of your photo of this coin; the detail is very well captured.

How does the color compare to the actual coin?
