Just wanted your thoughts. Im receiving my first batch of 2x2s and if there is any suggestions on how many or how far from the coin is best to staple, I rather not find out the hard way
I thinking about putting 40 staples in each 2x2. It will help reduce the chance of the coin being struck by lightning in a thunderstorm.
Im already set on the 4 staple set up. I have a few coins that have been stapled 3 in a triangle pattern. Looked silly to me.
Four. And if you've got a fine old ACE PILOT, no plier crimping is necessary: these vintage staplers register perfectly, always producing a text-book crimp.
I am with BQ. Staples have ruined a ton of coins in this hobby. If you must use 2x2's, are those self sealing ones just awful? Btw, to remove coins from stapled 2x2's, NEVER try to open them up. I have learned the hard way there just is NO WAY of preventing an odd coin from picking up a scratch. Always use a piece of plastic to pierce the plastic, then cut a ring of plastic open, then remove the coin. This is why I use flips. I refuse to have staples anywhere near coins.
I rarely use stapled 2x2's any more, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis. Seriously, the number of staples and their proximity to the mylar window would depend on the size of the coin and what information I intend to write on the 2x2. Chris
Im a metal fabricator by trade, all types of work, from race cars to fine furnture and sculptures. Another hobby of mine is building scratch-build remote control drag cars and machining engines, so I have a delicate touch. I know enough not to place a staple closer to the coin than the staple could reach a coin in the event there is a malfunction. I thought about getting the self sealing ones, but Im not sure if the adhesive would effect the coin or not. I know stainless staples wont.
Ugh, I shudder at the thought of using staples. One little slip and you've done serious damage, not to mention trying to get them out of those stapled 2x2... I would try to find a different storage method, personally I use paper envelopes.
I'd be concerned that the adhesive might affect the condition of the coin, too. I've also noticed that others who have used the self-seal type have had problems with the adhesive drying out so that the seal fails. To me, there would be nothing worse than having a coin fall out and landing on a hard surface like a tile or concrete floor. Chris
You're all wasting a 4th staple. 3 is all that's necessary. The perforated connection between the two halves is all the "hold" you need Just means I'll be taking less trips to my supply store than all you "4-staple guys"
Have you ever seen a 2x2 split at the folded edge when you use one for a thick coin like a Morgan or Peace dollar? Chris
