2013 equals the 100th annivesary of the best formatted nickel U.S. coin. Why hasen't the U.S. Mint produced a special tribute for this series ?

Not to mention the gold bullion coins. The mint didn't like minting them when they had to - the high relief of the coin was hard to strike up with details, then because the date and the denomination were high relief they quickly wore off. They did take care of the denomination, but the date never really got fixed. When the 25 years was up they were happy to go onto striking the much easier to produce Jeffersons.

That, and they never struck with any great quality.

My experience with the US Mint producing the "classic high relief designs" using today's high speed "low relief technology" is that the end result is NEVER as appealing as the original design.

The one exception is the Silver Eagle Obverse but then those coins receive a minimum of 2 high pressure strikes.

The 2006 Granite Lady Morgan Reverse Commemorative was a disaster IMO.

While I appreciate Dave's wish for nice coins again, I agree the mint cannot even strike high relief COLLECTOR coins. A lot relief buffalo like those on the back of jeffersons are a national tragedy.

I would petition more for high relief collector coins, and demand artistic excellence again from the mint. I vote with my wallet, I don't buy modern designs. I would buy pandas before any US mint products. At least they are cute.

High relief or not, an actual redo of the Buff nickel on a nickel would be sweet. It wouldn't be as nice as the original but still would be cool. Good idea! How about a new limited run of mercs too! Couldn't hurt.

Those coins would be a nightmare for the Mint. The highest run of the Buffalo was 119 million in 1936 from Philly. The Philly mint averages over 600 million nickels a year now. They went through dies quickly back during the original run; I shudder to think how fast they'd wear them out today. I agree that new coinage is needed. Never in American history have we had such a long run of one design. Except for changing to clad in 1965 the Roosevelt dime has been untouched for 67 years. The obverse of the Lincoln cent hasn't been touched in 104 years except for adding the VDB in 1919. The Jefferson nickel was the same way until 2005 when they changed the obverse only to change it again the next year. Frankly I think the current obverse is creepy looking. As for the quarters; please just stop with the different reverses and give us a whole new coin.

I would start working that bank loan now because this set will happen. It will just pop up and be on sale. Plan for at least $4k. That is what I am planning for. If the set doesn't happen, then you could send me all that money that you owe me. :D

Looks like we have a release date for the Buffalo Gold Proof. But the mint makes no mention of a special set. The only thing I could find was this on the mint's gold buffalo page...The 2013 American Buffalo Gold Proof Coins will go on sale at 12 noon on May 23, 2013.

So was that a typo or a Freudian slip? Hmmmm makes you wonder.
