So I've been search for a trade dollar the past couple months. Today I saw one I liked so I logged onto to heritage to check their archive prices. For what I'm looking for they were much cheaper, had a better selection, and better examples of my desired grade. Most of them sold between dec/feb. Now lately when ive done a heritage search Ive only found a few up for current auction and not within my price range. So my question is when do most of the good auctions come up, or what should one look for? Should they just check day to day? This is because when I look at the archives there was a good selection but not so much now. I've only ever bought one other coin on heritage so maybe I just don't know the cycle.
Heritage holds major auctions in conjunction with major shows. In between these sales there are much smaller and generally lower quality internet only sales on a weekly basis or thereabouts.
http://www.davidlawrence.com/invent...5/pn/US-Coins/pickseries/175/sn/Trade-Dollars You may want to look at DLRC also. There isnt a buyers premium and the buy it nows you can put in a good offer for them to consider. I've actually offered 20% under their ask and has been accepted multiple times. Just look at what they have weekly or fill out tge want list for emails when something comes up
Well just to give y'all an idea. I've been looking at 1877-S xd40/45 go around 250-400 on eBay. One popped up I liked and he wanted 450. I then decided to do some price digging and checked heritages old sales, seeing that there were at least 20 or so trade dollars of my given want that went for between 200-300, at least 100 less than eBay. Most recently when I've check heritage it's only been 1-3 trade dollars that are cc going for 5 figures. So to check the old listing and see that a flood exists of what I was looking for was kind of a shock and I just missed or wasn't looking at the time ie dec-feb.
You always can find a bunch being sold when you weren't in the market. Murphy is a brutal SOB. Heck, going through some coin sites I regularly find deals I would have jumped at, if only I had been aware of them at the time. That is why thankfully a lot of the fun of this hobby is in the hunt.
January was the Big FUN show auction, Feb was the big Long Beach coin show auction. The major auction houses hold big auctions around the time of the big coin shows. So heritage does the FUN show in January and June as well as the Long Beach show auctions in spring, summer, and fall. Stacks does the Baltimore show auctions spring, summer, and fall. Goldberg also does big auctions which coincide with Long Beach. Someone does an auction around the ANA. My best advice would be to wait for one of those bigger shows where there may be multiple pieces you, and others, are interested in. You may be able to pick up a better deal than during Heritages weekly auctions.
Hey guys, I didn't want to start a new thread on this but I'm trying to nail down what would be a fair price for an 1877 S XF45 trade dollar. I had a coin come up last night on ebay and the price is listed at $400. I checked heritage per my revolation yesterday and this thread and saw similar ones go for 250 on their. Then I checked PCGS and their price is 340. So if I was to give an offer what would be a fair price?
Item in question. I'll give the item number, I've had issues lately posting links. 230947963614 Thanks for the help all.
I don't know the first thing about grading these, but for a generic 1877-s trade dollar in xf45 I would be around $250 per the auction results from Heritage. Unless the coin on ebay is a steller example I would not do more than $300. I would be asking myself how much money do I want to pay to not have to wait a 6 months, because in 6 months you may see a couple of these come up for auction.
