OK, so I'm a new collector. ASE's are my thing. My goal is to get every single Proof ASE that was ever made (with the exception of the 1995W). I'm not there yet, but I must say that I do have the 2006, 2011 and 2012 sets, so I'm proud of that. But now I see those dang 5-Star General coins. Obviously not ASE's. Not even close. But I think I want them. And my ASE collection is not complete. I'm still missing about 20 proofs.
if its money your concerned about, I have a solution. Go in your wifes or girlfriends closet and sell some of her clothes, purses or shoes on Ebay. Take those funds and buy more coins. Easy.
Personally I'd stick to your guns till you finish the ase. That's what I do, I finish one thing before starting another. Otherwise I just end up constantly bouncing around without any real satisfaction or goal.
Collecting ASE's, you need to realize they will still be there tomorrow and the next day etc. Same is probably true of the 5-star generals. Collect what you can but do not rush to collect them all at once. This is coming from someone who is hooked on Numismatic collecting.
Yes. Problem that I'm having though is that I paid $700 for the 2011 set, $350 for the 2006. Quite high compared to the mint release price, but I still think they were a good deal at the present time. How much will the 5-Star coins go for in the future? Nobody knows I guess, but it doesn't matter. I'm collecting because I like the coins.
I think I've heard that a time or two! So much to learn there. Too many fakes can be bought. I really like the Eagles. But the 5-stars are cool too. Plus, up to this point, no gold coins for me. Too expensive right now.
Collecting only one type of coin can lead to getting bored. If money is not an option then I see nothing wrong with buying the 5-Star General coins and putting the ASEs on hold for a bit. After all, these are not rare coins you are seeking and they will always be available.
Dammit Tom, this is NOT what I need to hear right now. That's exactly what I was thinking. Of course, money is always an option, but the range for me is around the $500 mark. Which is roughly where those coins are. Dammit.
I don't see anything wrong with buying a 5 star general coin to slip into your collection, even the three coin set would be nice.:thumb: You can always go back to collecting ASE proofs when you're done, they won't go away or get mad at you. You are the one who calls the shots at that rifle range so don't take the journey so seriously. Give yourself a break and a reward, but yourself a 5 star coin or a Philippines Peso.
or put it in a place that you can easly find it, and forget where you put it. i did that once on accident.
Howdy, Not really a problem. As mentioned, the ASE Proofs are not going away. However, annual commems can sometimes become very valuable. If it was me, I'd add any annual commems I personally liked or thought might become more valuable. For example, the buffalo and the marine corps commems. The buff just because it's the buff and with the USMC commem, we were at war at the time. Both were easy to buy from the mint knowing they would probably be worth more than the normall commem. So, I guess my point is that it's always cheaper to buy something hot off the presses than later, so if you want it, buy it from the mint. peace, rono
