Luckily, my wife also has a bunch of hobbies & collections, so I don't feel "that" guilty ... ummm, but I certainly spend more money on my hobby than she spends on all of hers (combined)

... but at least she "gets what the whole collecting thingy is all about"

=> so I think that gives her a few extra style-points!!?

    ;)

The question is WHY do you feel guilty? I'm guessing it's not because of what you spend on coins, but rather that you know your wife would disapprove, and like all good-hearted men, you care about your wife's feelings. So you (and others) hide things, and of course, secrecy will also make you feel guilty in a healthy relationship. I tried it a few times over other issues, and felt miserable.

I don't know you, or your wife, or your relationship, but judging ONLY on the information I have, if I were you I would say to my wife, "Look darling, I have a hobby I love and I'm going to spend money on it. I've worked all my life and I deserve it. Your frugality is your decision - you can't make it for me. If you don't like it, you'll just have to find a way to deal. I'm tired of being secretive, and not enjoying my recreation."

I wish the ANA would come out with something like a "Certified Numismatic Adviser" certificate. CT guys can show their wives that their obsession is nothing more than a really smart "career move"...

"I'm just doing this for us, Honey". Kiss

We would have to accumulate annual Continuing Professional Education (CPE) points to keep our certs active. We would earn points by reading books, attending coin shows, writing articles, receiving Posts-of-the-Week (POTW) awards, hours spend on CT, etc.

45 years! congratulations! That is inspirational and so very rare these days.

My wife and I are celebrating our 4th anniversary today. It was 4 years ago we were married on a Florida beach. I am certain we will make it to 45 if I am still around. I married at a late age. :)

Tery, I suspect you just bought a ring for it's bullion and precious stone value. Then you decided you should just use it as an engagement ring so you could see it more often instead of stacking it away.

This is why I put in a pool right after we got married.

Yeah, right. That would really go over big. "Honey, you can just deal with it!!" I don't think so. I would like to make it to our 46th still alive.

Ummmm, I'm 50 and my wife is just turning 38 => that is definitely enough of a time-warp for me (and her, I'm sure!!?) ... man, 18 seems like a long, long, long time ago ... I probably have lucky-gitch that's 18 years old!!???
