Cleaned, harshly and then retoned - some of the toning was created by whatever agents were in the solution applied to clean it in the first place.

I find the toning on this one and some of his other listings to be suspect. I noted in his feedback that only one buyer (from the first two pages) commented about artificial toning but still left positive feedback. (?)

It does look like it has been cleaned and toned to hide it.

The coin is a poster child for when bad things happen to good coins :)

I not really a fan of toned coins but what would be some of the indicators that the toning was articially done?

Indicators are nature of the colors. And the adjacent colors.

Natural normal toning has a certain look. I want to give you a long winded explination, but here is a better piece of advice.

If the toning looks like it does on this cent, then it's fake.

Also, I noticed that silver coins, when a fake toning is applied, the colors all look the same - and the colors look like they sitting ontop of the coin. Natural toning, the colors look like they live deep within the coin.

Oh boy, I need to brush up on my grading skills! Thanks so much for the expert advice. Glad he has a return policy as this will probably be going back. I also noted he advertised it as a 1902 but the coin is dated 1907.
cpm9ball, yes, but I guess people liked the effect, real or fake.

Perhaps you could tell me if any of these toned Indian cents looks okay?

This one in particular - is it real?

I'd pass on any of the raw toners. The 1903 in the NGC slab looks fine, but I'm not an IHC collector so I couldn't tell you if that price is reasonable or not. Charmy, aka the Penny Lady, certainly could tell you, though.

Old cleaning and retoned. Stay away from coins that look like this.

On the ops coin , look at the color of Libertys' face , it's the color of a cleaned coin , same with the reverse , copper coins don't look that color unless they were cleaned . The toning most likely was used to cover up the color of the cleaned coin .

Every single coin that seller sells is artificial. I have been watching him for a long time. He is getting better, especially at buffalos, but it is still obvious.
