Could be the result of die wear, a struck through grease, or circulation damage. Won't be able to give you the exact analysis until we see pics...

Just out of curiosity, were you looking on the obverse or the reverse?

Okay! In that case, we'll need a good close-up of the area where the initials should be.

I'd say mint grease on this. They're kind of interesting as they can make random parts of the design disappear.

I'm not sure if it is possible for grease to block a part of the design that is in relief on the die...

I guess the only way to know for sure is go to a pro coin dealer

This is true. Worn out die then. Not shocking considering the amount of cents made in '82.

I highly doubt your local coin shop guy will know the cause of it. Most dealers don't bother getting into the nitty-gritty world of errors and varieties.

So what do you all think is it worth holding on to or should I use it for taxes on something I buy

Hang on to it. It can make an interesting conversation piece.

Maybe one day, 50 years from now, someone will claim to be Victor D. Brenner's alter ego, and you can ask him about it. J/K!

No value I can think of. Still an interesting coin, though. Keep up the hunt!
