The last few years I have stopped buying so much from the US Mint. I do, however; continue to buy the Silver Mint Proof Set. I am amazed to see the 2012-S set selling between two and three times its' cost on eBay. I just bought mine in November. What happend?

  3. The US Mint pulled it off sale with no real notice, and it currently has the lowest mintage of all the modern (1992-2012) annual silver proof sets. TC

Prices will eventually calm down. Look at the 99 silver set down to about $100 on ebay.

Sam...sell while the hype is high! :)

I guess a lot of Christmas presents were delayed for collectors. They are certainly out on eBay right now.

Just a new version of an old idea known as the greater fool theory. It started with mint products about 10 years ago.

Takes a while for folks to figure these things out I guess

I just see lots of "new lows" being generated. Its a dangerous game trying to profit on these long term though. Its the proverbial falling knife. Those willing to pay huge money today for "new keys" are not only betting there will be large demand for these items, they are also betting all future mintage will be higher, to justify the price they pay today.

I learned a long time ago to avoid these scenarios in coins, I just wish I would have carried that lesson over to stocks as well. More money had to be lost there to make me learn it applies to stocks as well.

And in general a lot of Mint products temporarily jump in price on ebay once the mint stops selling them. What is odd is that often they are high on ebay while they are still available for less from the mint. Then when the mint stop selling them they jump even higher. Then eventually most items finally fall back to less than issue price.
