    You must of misunderstood my text as I was not saying that was the only "one coin" " surviving example" but that is an example of the term Black Beauty. As stated I have collected Jefferson as well as nickels for over 52 years! I don't know of any 5 cent coin were there would be only one example.

    OK, now that your contest is over - Caz is correct, and that most definitely is a Black Beauty, a real Black Beauty.

    Those coins, and yes the Proofs and only the Proofs, are where the name originally came from. And no that coin was absolutely not AT, that is the real deal. The Jeff Proofs from this period were and are known for their spectacular toning. But only a very few of them ever toned this dark of a blue, to look at them almost looked black. Thus the name came to be because the coins were almost black in color, but yet extraordinarily beautiful.

    It was years later that the name was copied and used for the sintered planchet coins because it was a catchy name, and it helped with marketing the coins. Now the proof of this is obvious and right in front of your face. Simply look at the 2 coins - the gorgeous Proof, and a burned business strike, which one is more likely to have been called a Black Beauty when first seen ?

    I mean really, what's beautiful about a burned coin ? They have no luster to speak of and they are ugly to look at. But those Proofs with the dark indigo toning and full luster - those are true beauties ! A Black Beauty !

    I have a black nickel check it out. Its really neat to look at under the loop. The red area on the obverse looks more like a dark maroon color to the eye but shows up more red on a 1200 dpi scan. I included the original scan of the obverse. Dont forget to click to expand!

    There are hundreds, and probably thousands of them, of the sintered planchet coins out there. And they are not all just from 1959. Nor are they all nickels.

    I just opened some old roles. 3 roles were all 1958 p. Mixed in them were some very dark almost black and Shines like the others that look right. All the coins are brand new, raped in 1958 and just opened. What do I have?
