So I recently picked up my first 7070 for cheap at a local shop. I've always been a quality over quantity type of person and take my time searching for the right coin. With the 7070 being discontinued, expensive, and rare in its own right, I want to do something special and not just fill it with pocket change willy nilly.

So with that said, how do y'all do your dansco 7070, what grade ranges do you shoot for, do you do proofs, buy graded and crack out? that also brings up another thing, while dansco are nice they arent secure like say a slab so are you ok putting higher quality pieces like ms coins in them and risk that mint luster and swirl being effected or do you only do au and under in your albums?

Just looking to see how others go about filling their dansco 7070s. Thanks.

Well, the majority of that album isn't pocket change so you won't have to worry about that.
Its all dependent on what YOU want to do as far as filling it. I have zero proofs in mine, and I buy the best grade I can afford. One of these days I'll start upgrading, but I'm generally going for a good deal when it comes to the expensive coins. I like non-MS coins anyways because IMO they have more character and I love thinking about where they could have gone (I know where MS coins have been: a safe).
Personally, I think a Dansco is secure as just about any other way of storing your coins. I wouldn't worry at all about them unless you are storing the album in a questionable place (high humidity, direct sunlight, etc).

I have a Dansco 7070 and in fact just pulled it out the other day. I myself have decided to go the middle of the road route...because I don't feel that the Dansco is the best protection for high grade and rare coins. I myself will be making my type set with sub sets. thus the 7070 is not the storage I need. an example would be this nickels alone you have half dimes shield liberty buffalo Jefferson. I myself likes to have if possible years where are two different strikes one each so lets use the shield nickel 1883 and then there are 2 liberty 1883 No cents and cents so I need 3 spots for all 3 types on that date. And again in 1913 yes only 5 1913 liberty nickels struck but two varieties of the buffalo nickel....1938 both the Buffalo nickel as well as Jefferson were struck. with over laps in some coins I like to find the better grade image it and put in an airtight or kointain for storage. By doing this I can show off my type set with out the worry of loosing any coins and protect the coins from the environment. A type set to me includes items like a silver 3 cent pc both varieties , the 1828 half cent both 12 stars ans well as the 13 stared one. This is how I plan to build my set I will fill my 7070 but with mid grade coins and shoot for my type set with its sub sets as my true US type set.

Since I have already put one together buying whatever i can to fill the spot, I would take the slow route and pick up the nicest i can afford. The modern page is easy to do all proofs, the rest of the book would get very pricey trying to do that. My girlfriend did hers right i think, she has been on it for about 5 years and only needs the two seated dollars, but the rest of her coins are far nicer then mine were. Almost none of her coins have started toning yet either in her book.

What I do is focus on 4 or 5 coins at a time and try to find a good deal on a nice example of one that is problem free and looks nice next to the coins near it on the page. Some of the coins in my book were coins I found from roll hunting, and certainly need to be upgraded at some point.

Here's a link to my virtual 7070 :) If you click on one of the coins, it will probably open zoomed in, but I did not upload large pictures of several that I plan to upgrade soon.

I really like your "virtual 7070". I need to go that route since many of my best coins are slabbed and I have no intention of busting them out to put in an album.

Thanks! I'm working on the Jefferson Nickels 1938-2013 #7113 Dansco album now. PM me if you'd like a downloadable copy of the 7070 for yourself :)

I wonder if anybody working for Dansco is thinking to themselves "man, that's a great idea, charge $20 for the ability to fill any album we make, virtually" ... and then 6 months later i'll be kicking myself for not thinking of this when Dansco rolls out "the NEW ERA of (type) coin collecting"... i know there are registry sets, but theres something special about the 7070, a certain allure. i'd rather have one and fill it in real life though, but i'm sure some people would go the virtual route because you not only don't have to crack anything out but you could get dansco registry wars going on, aka bragging rights... just sayin'

edit: and i know pcgs, ngc has these as registry templates, but i'm talking about the actual ability to see the album on the screen just does something for me...

I like MS coins and circulated coins , there's a story in each coin . How did some 1816-1820 cents come to be in still unc. condition , or why do we have a #of 1891-CC Eagles still in MS when most CC eagles are worn or melted , all coins have a history and it's up to us to find it .

My 7070 is going to be filled with good looking coins, don't care UHF they're problem coins, i don't want to put thousand dollar coins in an album, so mine has some MS coins and some problem coins. I just want to see the details in the coins. Not looking for a $10,000 album, but that's my 7070.

I like your album. I'd like to know more on how you created that virtual album. Is it online only? One thing I noticed though is you are only collecting coins with dies rotated 180 degrees :D

My Dansco 7070 is nearing completion in high AU/MS grade coins. I have had the ability to travel a lot for my job the past three years, allowing me to go in to a great number of shops around the Eastern US. I try to buy raw coins (tough to find for some of them). The only 2 coins I have ever cracked out to put in the pages was a 1911 Barber dime ANACS graded AU55 (way under graded, it is MS) and a 20 cent piece graded MS 61 by NGC. This has real upgrade potential too.

My gold is not all AU or UNC. Much of it belonged to my great grandfather and though it would be nice to keep his originals in my set.

I dont think there should ever be a place for proofs in albums, but thats just my take on it. If you want proofs, then add proofs. I did use some coins from a 1966 SMS though.

I like this description. I'm considering xf/au. Something about ms in an album bugs me. Why don't you like proofs in albums? All and all thanks for the insight guys, keeping coming if you wish.

LOL! good point. I thought of that while i was working on it but decided it looks better to have the reverse showing rotated the proper direction. If you want the reverse to show like it does in the book, you just have to rotate the reverse part of each coins' picture. pretty simple :)

I will eventually send my album in to be graded. There is really something cool about opening up the front cover and seeing a bunch of Red/Brown copper, then flipping the next page to a bunch of lustrous silver, then repeating 3 more times!

Oh, there's nothing wrong with MS coins, and in fact several older coins in my 7070 are EF or higher. Its really a to each his own thing. Most UNC coins were kept that way on purpose. Somebody a hundred years ago thought "hey, there's a chance this will be worth something one day" and set it aside, or they set it aside to mark a special day, year, milestone, etc. I agree they have a history, but I find it fascinating to think whose pocket a circulated coin could have been in. :)
