I picked this counterstamp up on eBay last week BIN at $35. Not a bad price for a clean well struck stamp on a decent Large Cent. This isn't listed or attributed and probably never will be, but still a good deal IMO.

Here are a few museum tokens.

The first token hails from the Philadelphia Museum. Established by Charles Willson Peale, the museum featured works of art, paintings, and also natural history.



The second token hails from the Parthenon Museum & Gallery in New York City. Opened by Charles Willson Peale's son Rubens, it was an attempt at a New York version of the Philadelphia Museum. The museum did not last very long. Within two decades it and its exhibits had been sold to P.T. Barnum.



Finally, the last token was struck by John Milton for John Joseph Merlin. Merlin was an 18th century inventor, and later opened a museum in London featuring mechanical devices. Struck on the reverse of the specimen is his hybrid harpsichord-piano invention. Merlin is also credited with being the inventor of the inline skate, as well as several animatronic masterpieces.

Pius IX medal, 73mm, 1869. Both sides are deep brown but the high relief
on the obverse and deeply incused reverse make it difficult to capture the color.

Yarm's photographs are not shabby either. They are always complimentary to his subject matter. Good job Yarm.

Thanks for the links Paddy. I've been meaning to get a few nice carved nickels although I don't collect them per se. The high quality ones like yours are real works of art.

This is one of a lot of nice stuff I picked up at the Baltimore show on Friday. It's one of the big (44mm) heavy and beautifully struck medals I love to collect. This will fit nicely in my collection of coin collecting related exonumia. It's also serial numbered on the edge. I found it at Paul Cunningham's table.

How about an uncut Washington Senators Medal ....I am thinking this item when finished would of been a lapel pin or stick pin....maybe enamelled over to show the details. As you can see the casting tails are still around the Medal its self ...the entire medal is about 20mm once cut about 16 mm it was casted in what looks to be copper,no reverse just plain surface.

Thanks Cheetah! I always make it a point to stop at Paul's table as he has tons of interesting tokens and medals to look at. I also make it a point to see Steve Hayden and Ernie Latter...always a lot to see there too. Btw, I bought a nice Woods Minstrels counterstamp on a Spanish 2-Reales from Hayden...from the late Steve Tannenbaum's collection. I'll post it when I get a picture.
