$12,500. Cant believe sooo many people are bashing this coin Its probably the most famous ancient coin of all time celebrating arguably the best remembered moment in Roman history and less than 100 (46-75?) of them still exist today. I'll repeat that, less than 100 of them still exist today. I'd take one I could afford in any condition - while you all wait for a one in 'worthy' condition I wish you luck in winning the lottery so you can pay for it when it does surface, they regularly hit 6 figures.
I would also be happy to own such a historical coin--but there are many other coins I'd get more enjoyment from--at the price this will close.
Again => back to my "chasing tail" scenario => even if the chick is a Princess, I'm not gonna risk all of my efforts and fortune chasing a face that could stop a clock (if I'm gonna spend the rest of my life with a lil' sweetie then "attraction" is definitely one of the main ingredients!! ... and this lil' EID-honey is not triggering the ol' primal drums!!) ... but hey => it sounds like a few of you swingin' bachelors would love to start a meaningful relationship with Miss March (knock yourselves out) ... I would rather date AncientJoe's $100,000 coin ... now there is a Holy Grail!! "Hello beautiful lady, my name is stevex6 and I'm a Leo" "Huh? ... hey what do you mean, 'drop dead creep?' ... you're a fiesty one, eh?" :goof:
This has definitely been an interesting thread! Here is some more food for thought, with a few of the previously sold "lesser" EID MAR denarii. The nicest 'A' coins sell for $400K+, so these are the 'B' and lower versions which I've linked to from acsearch.info. Note that the Buyer's Premium isn't included in these prices so add 15-20% on for the final estimate: $90K - sold in 2013 $50K - sold in 2009 $31K - sold in 2008 $122K - sold in 2008 $120K - sold in 2007 $2500 - sold in 2005
i prefer this babe... 1 of only 2 coins known to mankind . sold in 2008 at NAC for 226,556$ + fees...
You're funny stevex, but I gotta side with bobbiehelmet on this one. Beauty is skin-deep, and often there are far more substantial attributes to be considered. For every supermodel on the planet, you know there's some guy out there that's sick and tired of her crap.
Ignoring the quality ones, if I had to pick one of the problem based ones I could live with, it would be the 31K piece. Why? Well its an eyesore yes but at least the portrait of brutus can be made out and the bankers marks on the reverse I can tolerate.
Update: The EID MAR I posted about sold for 3600 GBP ($5,400). Personally, I think this was a weak price realized - I could have seen it going for a fair amount more. However, that could have been due to any number of things which we can't observe online. It is definitely interesting to see what the "basal value" of an EID MAR is at least!
Thanks. I would also say that is a low price. If I were a strong RR collector, I would have seriously considered it at that level.
It's possible that this coin had significant porosity and/or the metal was so compromised that the coin was in danger of shattering under a very small impact or surface strike. To my eye, this looked like a very poor coin that didn't have a lot of value even for an EID MAR denarius.
Wow. That is almost a price I could consider if I bought just one coin in one year... My wife would kill me though.
Where are you going to buy another one though? I know ancients is a waiting game, but I have seen maybe 8 of these for sale in 15 years, and most of the time go for the price of a small house.
I wondered if it might go higher due to interest from it being a UK find. I have some trouble understanding how one of these got to the UK. Perhaps it suffered from people being suspicious of a new find so beat up that it might not be easily determined to be good.
