Coin storage used

Just curious what storage systems you guys use. I currently store my flips in boxes, either single or double row. My problem is organization. I like to keep similar coins in boxes, but once i fill a central asian, sassanid, roman provincial, etc box i put it in the sdb. But then new purchases don't have a box to go in. So, new purchases get put into a "common" box until i get enough to justify a new box. But, once i fill that, its in the sdb and i have to start all over.

What do you guys do? Any suggestions to do this better?

You and I have the same problem. I still can't figure out how I want to organize my collection. It becomes difficult when I have 5 Persian coins- and 50 Asia Minor Coins and 30 Greeks 50 Romans and 1 Axumite. I stick them in the the PVC flips and sleeves in order of how often I handle the coin. Mainly my tactile favorites on top.

I am in the process of moving from trays to paper envelopes because my SDB space for trays is full. Boxed coins are in catalog order and new coins are in a separate box which will get integrated into the catalog order when I feel there is enough. Last year that was once because I did not buy more coins that fit in a box. I don't like plastic flips and don't need to look at coins through the flips since I have photos of every coin. I do try to visit each coin a couple times a year to check for problems like bronze disease but I have a separate try for coins that have ever had BD so I can visit them easier.

I prefer trays but I'm trying to prepare the bunch to be sent off to a dealer when the time comes to liquidate. Trays don't mail well. I asked a dealer (the one I would suggest my heirs contact if I died today) and was told he does not care between the storage methods since all have their ups and downs and he would be repackaging and relabeling everything anyway.

I currently have them in 2x2 flips that are then stored in pvc free album pages. My collection is small compared to many here & I still have a few blank pages to fill.

I did the box thing first but over time the flips got scuffed so it ticked me off & wont go back to that way.

I would love trays but I live in a small place so storage would be an issue. And ive condensed getting rid of alot of needless things over the years.

Well, y'all are talking about ancient coins, but for my world coins I put them in 2x2s and then put them in pages in albums organized alphabetically by country. I'm at the point now where almost every country has enough coins to justify its own page or pages, but for those that don't I have a few regional pages where I put places like Armenia and Afghanistan that I only have a few of. The albums themselves are in the back of a closet and under the bed. Not ideal but we live in a condo right now and don't have a lot of space. I think if I kept them in a safe deposit box I'd probably lose interest in collecting because I'd have to go to the bank every time I wanted to do something. That's not a hobby to me.

I hear you HD but otoh i do not want to come home someday and not have any coins to my name either. So i keep most in the sdb.

However, i do find myself keeping quite a few world coins in albums. Some i bought that way, others i just never moved to boxes. I pulled out most silver and gold, though, and put in the sdb. I might just continue to do this, have world in albums except for high dollar ones, but the ancients in boxes in the sdb.

@Dougsmth, have you thought of giving people on CT a shot at anything you wish to sell?

Understandable. I'd be devastated if my coins got stolen, but for now I'm in a condo and I feel pretty secure here.

i always am interested in threads like these, i can never decide exactly what to do. currently my ancients are in 2x2 flips in single row boxes...i keep them in there with a silica pack to keep moisture down...i'm thinking of migrating my faves to an ancient album.
my modern coins are already in albums, all in pvc free stuff. one album america's, one album for the rest of the world.
    why do it this way?
beats the heck out of me! (i'm slightly crazy i think :axemeethead: )

I've found that images are surprisingly satisfying to me. I always thought this would be a problem as well, but it works for me. To keep my direct interest, I have several lower value coins on my desk which I handle frequently just for some added enjoyment.

I agree. The need to touch is satisfied by $20 coins. My recent moving of my photos to the Nook has proven very satisfying to me as well since I can take it anywhere and enjoy my coins through photos (the making of which is a side hobby anyway).

For my World silver that I do not touch, I use the Quadrum square capsule system. I love the uniformity and rigid construction. All capsules are 2x2 (50mm) but the inner foam comes in all mm sizes. I buy them from Lighthouse.

I spent a few weeks trying to settle on a box for my collection (90% are slabs) and ended-up picking up one from Lighthouse (which was a pain in the butt, since their Canadian presence is nonexistent).

I decided to go with their Volterra Trio presentation case for 24 slabs.

I prefer 2x2s and non-PVC flips over paper envelopes. Obviously, you cannot see what is inside the paper envelope at a glance. All 2x2s & flips fit into double row boxes.

I enjoy my 3-ring albums for viewing my favorites.

Interesting solution, Collect89 - is that two 2x2 flips taped together with the coin in the middle? That's a good idea :thumb:

This is the set up I am working with. PVC free flips in PVC free sleeves in an albulm. Each coin with this particulars scrawled on a 2x2 piece of paper.
