Hello board, http://www.ebay.com/itm/1921-MORGAN...ZInse19RzHmfKjRV%2F8s%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc Won this coin on the Bay and just noticed the lower rim of the obverse looked strange. Any thoughts guys?
Not sure what happened on the morgan, but I would not have even come close to paying that much for that morgan dollar.
I love it my friend... It's only when everyone starts thinking like you that the prices go down even further; only for me to clean-up on
That's what is called finning. On this coin it's minimal, but it is a fairly common thing to find, and on virtually any denomination. Finning can be caused by a few things, when a coin is struck with excessive pressure, when the planchet is too thick, or when the die spacing is less than it is supposed to be. All of these result in the same thing, small amounts of metal are squeezed out from between the dies and the collar.
I think you overpaid, too! With that said, have you taken the time to compare your specimen to the VAMWorld listings to see if there is a match? You have the coin in-hand so you are in a better position to examine the PUP's. Chris
There may be a touch of finning going on below the 192 but I think what he was referring to was the line through the denticals. I think the "line" is actually the original junction of the denticals and the rim, but a collar clash has somehow transferred the image of the denticals onto the portion of the die that creates the rim making the denticals appear slightly longer with a dividing line across them. (Clash & counterclash?)
