Here is another of the coins I purchased before being busted by the wife:

MN FONTEIUS CF Roman Republic AR Denarius
OBV: Laureate head of Apollo Vejovis right, M FONTEI CF behind, thunderbolt below, ROMA monogram below chin
REV: Infant Genius riding goat right, caps of the Dioscuri above, filleted thyrsos below
    Struck at Rome, 85 BC
    4.0g, 20mm
    Cr353/1a; Fonteia 9
MN FONTEIUS CF 1 OBV.jpg MN FONTEIUS CF 1 REV.jpg

The reverse of this coin imitates a statue in the temple of Vejovis in Rome, with Genius riding the goat Amalthea. Jupiter was suckled by Almalthea on Mount Ida, and her horns gave rise to the cornucopiae.

Hopefully your moratorium won't last too much longer...(?)

I wonder why there are no comments about this coin. I know Jerry has a nice one of this variety.

People just got talking about other stuff. I like the coin - I always like the infant on goat theme, and the bust is well-executed. Nice pick-up. :thumb:

Thanks JA. I wasn't looking for compliments, but I'll take them. I just love the history and background. I was looking for some input from the ole crowd.

Nice addition. Whenever I see this kind of reverse I think of Valerian II using it on his. Dont own that type though, mines the better Spes for him.

All these RRs you've posted recently have made me take a good hard look at the coinage of that period. I'm not ready to go there yet, but I appreciate seeing all of yours.

Other than the Imperatorial coins, I stayed away from RR coins until last year. The more I look the more I like. If one just takes a cursory look and sees only the racing reverses, you might not find them to be interesting. But, like many I've posted, there are many out there with very intriguing reverses with historical backgrounds. I still love my Roman Imperial coins, but the reverses have begun to be boring to me. I know. There are many out there with reverses with a story as well. I aggressively search them out, but many I cannot afford.

Definitely an excellent Roman Republic coin. I still do not own one yet.

How many RR coins do you have now?

Not that many. If I don't count the Imperatorial coins, I believe I have 19 RR coins. You can see them on my albums on this site.
