A lot of his coins always seem to be brown - the same kind of brown. http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_from=&_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ssn=taterthecat&rt=nc
They look fine to me. Some are undoubtedly recolored, but plenty of ancient coins are. He could use some better lighting, though.
One of the better ebay dealers around. Ive gotten 12 coins total in my collecting from him. One just came yesterday
Yes, I saw those as well. I realize that cleaning ancients is par for the course, but I wanted to know if anyone thought his efforts exceeded acceptable limits. He does offer auctions with low opening bids and no reserve, which I appreciate immensely.
I really shouldn't even comment in the ancient section. I wanted to clarify that I have no opinion on his coins whatsoever. I realize brushes and even hammers are sometimes needed with ancients. I've seen the large clumps they come in sometimes!
Is the guy a tooth brush salesman? I see tooth brushes. Ancient toothbrushes? Did Pharaoh brush his teeth with these?
they look pretty stiff for toothbrushes.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tater-Ancie...707?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45f612b5a3
I think his coins are fine. Go to a coin show in Europe and you will see many dark brown ancient bronze and copper coins. I think most AE coins start out dark. Only if AE coins have been overcleaned do they need to be re-darkened. Of course, many have been overcleaned, but I don't see that as typical of his coins.
It's my opinion that if the patina has been removed and is necessary sometimes in the cleaning process, it should be mentioned. As well as mentioning a darkener has been used. As well as tooling and any aggressive cleaning techniques.
