I love this coin because it shows 1 of my favorite Germany 5 mark eagles on the bottom right and I think that is so cool. I also collect those 5 mark eagles too.

I like the obverse of this coin. I collect the veiled queen coins in 2, 5 ,10 denomination... I like the 10 best because it's the biggest coin. someday I want to buy on Ebay a high grade of that coin. someone on the forum pointed out other coins from Poland I need/could get. soon I will get the cheaper coins I need for this set.

I am guess the Canadians coin collectors would like this coin to see their coins so small on this medal ???

it is is a fun collection. I have 10 more coins for this collection to get still. some range from $3.00 on up to $600.00. the more expensive ones can wait awhile. lol. this collection is not something you see everyday...unless you specifically collect world coins. I think they are so cool.:thumb:

What I have always found odd about the design is that, for the 2 DM, two heads from the third series were picked - for the 5 DM, however, only the first series was considered. Ah well ...

Here is one from Austria which I do not have; a bimetallic coin (pill gold, ring silver). 1000 Schilling 1994 commemorating the 800th anniversary of the mint in Vienna. The gold part shows a pfennig/denarius from the late 12c. Richard Lionheart contributed, not quite so voluntarily ;) , to the new mint and the silver that it could now make coins from ...

Here is one from the GDR (10 Mark 1981) commemorating the 700th anniversary of the mint in Berlin. (No image below? Click here.)

The coin in the middle is a so-called Eternal Penny from the mid-14c. This is a drawing of the original.

Talking about Austria, this is a piece that I like a lot. Yes, in general I dislike colored coins, but this silver/niobium series (and particularly this very issue) I find appealing.

The coin commemorates the 700th anniversary of the city rights for Hall (in Tyrol). One side shows a satellite taking an image of the city (the modern part so to say), the other side shows ... not a coin but its die. Hall got a mint in the 15c (that "Old Mint" is a museum today), and that side features a "Guldiner" die from 1486. Below (or here) is an image of the design.

As for an actual coin photo, here is a great one (again, not mine ...) of the "die" side: http://www.honscha.de/bilder/detail/18717v.jpg Here you can see that the horseman scene is not "raised" as it would normally be on a coin but incused and mirrored. Very interesting effect methinks.

I was looking at these coins the other day, and I like them very much. I think the designs are well-done, and the colorized niobium is also original and fascinating: they use a technique called anodized oxidation to create the color, and apparently it's more subtle in hand than the graphics suggest.

Still, niobium is as common as lead, and these pieces are overpriced in my opinion, at least when it comes to their metal content. They remind me of the all the medals you can get in German silver, which is neither German nor silver. It's a base metal coin with a little silver around the edges - there's no way I'm forking out $70 - $100 for one.

I find this collection unique. still many coins to get for this collection. it's on the back burner for now. many more insects coins to hunt and get now.
