This one is another borderline coin that happens to be mine, unlike that other one I posted (still thinking about buying the other, btw). So, is this MS or AU? There is an interesting story that goes with it, and I shall tell it after folks have given their opinion (preferably with reasons).

maybe the image shows less luster than the coin really has but I don't enough strength in the eagle's feathers or on her hair so AU

-----that being said I really really really hope it isn't a MS-64 or something :foot-mouth:

Sorry, but I don't think it's even close to being borderline. The wear looks quite obvious to me.

Oh I agree with you, but there is a story connected to it. Will reveal it afterwards.

Is this a scan Dave? I'm just not seeing the luster if there is any. I'd go with AU as I'm perceiving some 'wear' on the hair above Libertys' forehead and also on the eagles head and right wing. Nice coin though, and one that I would be proud to have in my collection......:)

So What's The Story? (if you were from the NY metro area back in the late seventies you'd know:))

[edit to add] I wouldn't be surprised to see this piece in a '61 holder though.........

I think that the coin is in a MS62 slab & you bought it before you knew better ;)

I voted that the coin is MS ,because that is what I believe the holder says it is ,not what my personal opinion is.

It is a picture, and a very accurate one. It shows the coin as it really is,and represents the surfaces accurately. The question basically is, whether or not it is MS or AU based on the TPG. It is more complicated than you would normally think, and it isn't a trick question--just a complicating factor. :) :)

OK, that's the question. But the point is, it doesn't matter if the TPG says the coin is MS. The reality, and the important thing, is that the coin is AU regardless of what the TPG says.

Personally, I have trouble with their images and would prefer they show coins in a livelier manner, but at least they are consistent.

If resubmitted, I could easily see it receiving different grades with one TPG - as seems often the case - awarding it a tick or two higher, but I will stick with Ch AU either way.

Yes, in reality. Certainly not monetarily--I think that you are right in terms of actuality. However, marketability is certainly affected by the transition from a high level AU to a MS coin. So, market value would be positively or negatively impacted. Correct? Hypothetically, if the coin were MS, it would sell for a considerable difference than if it were high level AU. Conversely, the opposite would be true--it would lose market value if it were downgraded from a MS coin to an AU one.

It's hard to tell the difference between a weak strike and wear with pictures like this. I know some early varieties of Large Cents are well known for weak strikes so you would need to know whether this particular date and variety is known for weak strikes or not.

There's a lot more to determining wear than just the first impression. It also helps if you can see discoloration on the high points or not, regardless of strike.

As you've pointed out before, I obviously don't know what MS is :p, but whatever it is, that coin is a hard day's ride from the border...

That coin does not have the luster, look of an ms coin. I don't care what the tpg says.
