You just don't get it. This was an exercise in grading, and no need to get personal. If you were here for any period of time, you would realize that these exercises go on all the time--we learn from each other, and YES, we do reinforce each other's opinion, and often disagree rather heatedly. It is usually in the spirit of education for all, and in a friendly way. You haven't spent much time here, otherwise, you would know that coin issues are RARELY cut and dried. This particular coin, if you know Morgans, makes a HUGE leap from AU to MS, as it is a definite good date, and conditional rarity. The borderline coins like that are hard to grade, and as such, there is oft times considerable debate as to what a coin would really grade. I welcome such diversity of opinion, and educational opportunities between seasoned collectors, and newbies who wish to learn--that is why I posted this particular coin. Sorry that you "just don't get that," but if you stick around here with an open mind, perhaps you will, and get some enjoyment from something that is anything but cut and dried.
Asking is one thing, but don't get your panties in such a twist. Yes, it makes an ENORMOUS difference if it is graded by the pros, sometimes double the value or more.
My sincerest apologioes to you. I didn't realize I was getting personal since it was you who injected your 40 years experience. Is that not personal? You asked for personal opinions and then come down on me for being personal??? Look at the way your are writing to me in a condescending manner: "You just don't get it." " If you were here for any period of time, you would realize" " You haven't spent much time here, otherwise, you would know " "if you know Morgans" (I have over 100 Morgans, many graded & slabbed, but I guess I know nothing) " Sorry that you "just don't get that," but if you stick around here with an open mind, perhaps you will" Your condescenion aside.. Sorry I intruded on your turf. I think you are getting too caught up in your own expertise to see the forest through the trees. You were looking for a value from others. I gave you the humble opinion of the "book" and you politely looked down your nose at it. So be it. I have seen this same type of scenarios in gun collecting. No difference. The 40 year collector vs the stupid amatuer that uses a book to navagate the waters of collecting anything. Books aren't gospel, but they do set some standards accepted by the industry. What does it matter? Whether it's AU or MS...in the big leagues of sales. Would your coin bring any more money if it were "almost" MS? I don't know but I suspect if it were in an auction, the value would be what one was willing to pay for it, not whether it was almost MS or AU But you cast all of this aside as being irrelevant..OK My bad. It's not what you are looking for here. I think it's great you admire your coin so much, and to hold it out for other collectors to admire, so when you asked for the conclusions of others, be ready for a "newbies" opinion. No need to criticize it. No need to comment at all. Love your coin, share it with others, but don't come down on me because I may have misunderstood what you are looking for here. I hope you find it. Once again, my apologies for particpating in the wrong way to you.
Pretty heavily bagmarked, but the toning suggests to me that it's (technically speaking) uncirculated. But I'd add that back when the CC Morgans were categorized for release by the GSA, any that showed toning didn't earn placement in the "uncirculated" marked holders.... Edit: I subsequently have seen that the GSA practice was already mentioned in this thread, so I apologize for bringing it up redundantly.
My sincere advice if you want a pleasant experience around here is to have less attitude, until people know you better. Sarcasm and put downs do not go over well here--you have done it on several threads, and I will report it to the moderators for gratuitous attitude. Play nice, or you won't be taken seriously.
Ok, back on topic, as I am finding the immaturity beyond tiresome. It is clear that coins that are borderline create a dilemma for most of us. The majority of folks seem to think the coin is AU, and I agree. My opinion is that it would not cross as an MS coin with either PCGS or NGC--it would be an AU 58, in all likelihood. To me, MS 60 is a very theoretical grade--if a coin looks nice and shiny, but has lots of marks, and even a tiny, microscopic bit of wear or a poor strike combined with lots of marks, it could easily go AU. Likewise, it could have a small amount of rub,and be called MS just as easily. That is why this level of grade intrigues me, especially with a coin like this that makes a jump from a $500 coin in AU to a $2000-5000 value in low grade MS. THere are many examples of this, and I wanted to post this one, as it intrigues me.
I really hate to say this, and I am not saying it to just you, but it needs said. There are several ways to say it - it's a two way street, it takes two to tango, respect only works if it goes both ways, practice what you preach - I think everybody gets the idea. And we have rules about this. One of those rules is that everyone is treated with respect and that members do not retaliate, defend themselves, or strike back, if somebody forgets that rule. Do I need to repeat that last part ? I suggest everybody remember that.
That is fine, I have no problem with it, as long as EVERYBODY is called out, including all perpetrators. I'd hate to be singled out, as there are many who contribute to the back and forth, and I have been trying to stop it to no avail. I am happy to comply.
