Okay, here is the coin in a slab. Doesn't help much, as I still think it is AU:

It's not true that only the blast white coins were put in the Unc holders eddie, there were plenty of toned coins in them as well.

The main point is that the people who were doing the deciding as to what coins were Unc and what coins were not Unc - they didn't know what they were doing. As a result there Unc coins put in the Unc holders, Unc coins put in the Silver Dollar holders, and Unc coins put in the soft packs. Of course the opposite was true as well, there were some circulated coins put in the Unc holders as well as both of the others.

The only way to determine if a coin in any of the GSA sales holders is Unc or not is to ignore the holder and look at the coins. Because they made mistakes in all of them.

You should give cutoff times. At least I got the vote right before I saw the grade on page 3.

Great thread Morgan Dollar. I believed it made MS because the wing tips and the obverse liberty letters along with the wheat sprouts gave it MS. Again keep em coming.

If you own it, it might be worth a crossover to a more respected tpg’er. If it is unc, I’d say it’s better than 60, maybe 63/64. In that holder it’s only as good as au, then maybe, in hand, it is.

Pretty sure it is AU--I'd say AU 58 in my opinion.

It's worth a lot more if it crosses over.

I don't think that there is any way that that coin is MS--I say it is a classically overgraded AU coin.

Although MS stands for "mint state", I take it to mean "uncirculated". So I voted MS even though I would rather buy an nice looking AU than this MS.

I think AU would be the grade as it really sums up the coins overall appearance, that being the look of a coin that is ALMOST uncirculated. However if sent in for grading all bets are off... sometimes PCGS and NGC are just straight out to lunch or looking forward to the weekend when grading

I feel the luster breaks on the obverse and reverse are slight enough that they could be considered cabinet friction. If that is the case I would give this coins a MS designation and the toning is very nice.

I was told by an expert from one of the TPGs who is a personal friend NOT to think of submission, as it is not a MS coin. He doubts that his company, which is one of the two biggies (don't want to mention his name or affiliation so as not to get him in trouble) would cross it as MS. I agree with him. I DO NOT own the coin right now, but am negotiating to buy it--I'd like to pay high level AU prices as that is what I think it is worth. The seller has it as borderline MS price.

Why go to such great lengths for a coin you don't even own? To prove a point? If that's it, you're wasting your time.

Until the coin is resubmitted, there's no way of knowing whether it'll cross or not - one guy's opinion is just as good as the next's - but since no one here even owns the coin, all of this nonsense back-and-fourth is pointless.

Your opinion. Not mine. I am thinking of buying the coin, kind sir. Will you allow me the indulgence to use it as a learning experience for other people to illustrate borderline MS/AU coins? :) :)

Now this is what I enjoy seeing, a good spirited and energetic conversation. Honestly, MS60 is one of those grades I don't see that often, and I think I see it more from ICG than from any other TPG out there. We're talking a hairline away or the slightest rub from being AU and vice versa to 61/62. Color me crazy but the 60 grade seems transitionally irrelevant because they can be priced out either way. More toward AU numbers or low MS.

The definitions, if you want to rely upon a well known book*:

    AU:

Slight trace of wear on the bust shoulder and hair left of the forehead, and on the eagles breast and top edges of the wings.

    MS-60:

No trace of wear. Full mint luster present but may be noticeably marred by scuff marks or bag abrasions.

As for the coin pictured in the thread starter..I would go with AU 50 merely because of the black marks on the face and what looks to be a small ding on the edge of the coin. Also the wear on the breast of the eagle is there.

Well aware of those definitions. I am going on my experience of 40 years of collecting that tells me it is about AU 58 or so--very high level AU.

OK So you know what you know, after 40 years, then why the big dilemma? You don't trust your own subjective evaluation? Or are you seeking reinforcement for it? Are you looking for a monetary value other than what is generally accepted on the open market? Not quite sure of what you are looking for here.

Honestly asking, isn't it either AU or MS? Cut and dried. Is it kind of like being a little pregnant? I can undserstand it being "on the cusp", so to speak, but does it really make a difference if it were to be graded by the Pros?

Just asking without 40 years of experience..so I can understand here.
