I have been checking Coin Talk twice a day for this specific thread. That coin looks real and would be pretty big news even on mainstream news.
I for one would looooove some nice clear shots of this one... It has a really good chance of being the real deal.... The surfaces have me worried tho... It looks wiped.
I've seen some scary stuff... Die cracks and die markers have been replicated on counterfeits in the past... I have seen it personally... I feel that this coin is ok... But I will not commit fully till we get some better pictures.
Just googled large cent which told me about die cracks etc-am afraid it didn't tell me in large letters how to hold a coin! I have contacted Morton and Eden (dealers)in the Uk who are affiliated to Sotheby's
Don't let a small shop buy it from you. I'd put it into a large auction because if its real a lot of people will be fighting for this coin. Like they said earlier its a 5 digit coin easily if is real good luck
Many Thanks BiggTee44- Good advice- Am sure Sotheby's have auctions in the US- will keep you all posted!
I would agree - I am tending toward genuine, based on the new pictures. Worth as much as a small car if, as we all hoping, it is confirmed real.
Incredible! I hope this is genuine. Keep us updated with what you do with this coin. Absolutely amazing find!
Clearer pictures Hi everyone Please see these clearer pictures which seem to show quite a few scratches etc which cannot be seen by the naked eye. I emailed some Uk auction houses and they reckoned it would be worth £600- £800 pounds so not quite a new car but maybe a bike!
Sadly the surfaces do seem to be impaired by what looks like wiping... Still tho a nice looking coin and definitely worth several thousand dollars.
Excellent, thanks for the better pictures, and ones of the edge. This does not look like an electrotype copy, and with those details I would say almost 100% that is a real coin, and would put the grade around 50 net 40 scratch on the pole, maybe down to net 35 for a cleaning. There are multiple small die cracks, and die clash marks now visible in the picture, coming off the neck where it meets the bust, cracks between the leaves under AT. Surfaces look solid although it may have had an old cleaning. For comparison purposes here is the Holmes coin, graded 55 net 45 which sold for $13,800 back in 2009: http://images.goldbergauctions.com/php/lot_auc.php?site=1&sale=54&lot=71
Dont go through an auction house that says its only work $1200 US dollars. This coin is worth several times that. You do need to have this graded by PCGS or NGC. Even if it comes back with a "details" grade, I would assume this is worth upwards of $10K. Fact of the matter is, you must have it certified if you plan on selling it.
"DON'T" ...large enough? Btw...everyone knows why I'm "Yakpoo"...how did you come by the name "Biscuitface"?
