They're having a coin collector show on the channel now. I just flipped over to it and they were selling a 24K "gold" state quarters set for $79.95. As they were cutting to commercial break, the lady was giving the breakdown of the cost of the case, and airtites. She then said "for an extra $5 you get all the gold coins! Oh, and they're plated, btw." End...SCENE! Roll commercial! I almost fell off my chair laughing!
I am always amused by this show, I enjoy watching it to pick up on the information they tell about coins, but would never buy, they are seriously over priced, selling the girl scouts UC for $189 in MS70 from..wait for it...Anacs, want the Proof in PR70, $10 more bucks, $199...Plus $10 to ship it to you!!!
True, I know they charge more to cover their overhead, the cost for the TV show, etc, but I still wonder who is buying all that stuff at those prices, when they can go to their LCS or directly to the mint and get things cheaper or even eBay, craigslist, etc.
But then they wouldn't get their special collectors Red Oak box. Always a customer favorite. A 79.95 value. FOR FREE.
Silverhouse, I like your style, I thought I was the only one that picks up on the "Red Oak Presentation Box"...I love how they basically say, we sell this for 79.95 empty, so for 99.95 we are basically giving you the box for free or they spin it another way, they say you are basically buying the box and we are throwing in all the coins for next to nothing. Got to love those colorized, hologram and "24K presentation gold" quarters. Here is a thought, sell the all silver proofs in the red oak, then again, I could not imagine the price for that one!
I see Hsn junk to much?? Tv +buy coins is 1 big mistakes made by too many!!! Buy the book before u buy any coin is 1 good rule to follow.
I record the shows, and run them on fast forward to see what they're selling and at what cost. Then I look on eBay and see how much cheaper everything really is (and that's saying alot for eBay). I can honestly say though, that if the hologram quarters were cheaper, I would probably pick them up, they just look cool. Side note though - I picked up the 2009 Proof Lincolns all PR70 first day issue or whatever, in the Red Oak Presentation box at my LCS that someone probably paid WAY too much for, for a mere $9.95.
Nice...I basically do the same thing, although I only usually fast forward through the quarters section. It was a bit refreshing that they were selling the Girl Scouts Coin, something different from the quarters, ASE's and the El Cazadors! I do the same above for the show Coin Shoppe on ShopNBC. I see Coin Vault on Youtube in Clips, but that show or channel is not available here in the east coast.
Tacoma, WA. I was shocked when he told me the price. They were telling me that they only paid $5 for it as well, because they just didn't see the value in the set from ANACS and because it was so mass produced and sold. It now sits on my mantle as my steal of the year. Interestingly enough, they had a few graded 2009 cents, and they were $10 each. Didn't really look at them much as I already got what I wanted.
