OK, it's not the greatest coin in the world, but for the cost of lunch at McDonald's it's not bad. I was looking at the various types at Wildwinds but couldn't find an exact match - one with the S under the horse. It's a tetradrachm, right? Any insight would be much appreciated... Philip II of Macedon, AE17, 6.7g Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo left. Reverse: FILLIPOU, rider on horseback right, S below. The dealer wrote C1733 - is that an official reference number, or his own catalog number?
Nice .... man that is soooooooooooo much better than my regular Filet-O-Fish order!! => awesome McDonald's purchase my friend!!
Not a fan of McDonalds so I guess I would prefer that coin over anything on their menu. Good coin though, I like coins from Macedon. I think that number might be his own for inventory.
I have purchased from the seller of your coin. No problems. I can't help you with the attribution of this one. Sorry. But good buy. :thumb:
Well... it isn`t a Tetradrachm.. thats for sure! It is an AE17... unknown bronze denomination.... They made their tetradrachms of silver!
Everyone makes dumb mistakes... I'm another noob who knows alot about many esoteric parts of early-mid Roman History.... Just listen to the experts (Dionysos, Dougsmit, etc) here, they are :bow: worthy... Although sometime I are correct, and they are wrong... then I get :u*meY:!
Exciting! Because he was the father of Alexander the supreme ruler of Greece in those days, tutored by Aristotle! Please research the history behind him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_II_of_Macedon
I've read it already - it seems like one of the better-researched wiki articles. Thanks for the reference!
These bronzes were, like the tetradrachms and staters in the name of Phillip II, were regularly struck into the late 4th century BC. Alas, while the more numerous symbols on the precious metal coinage has usually allowed dating to within a few years, the bronzes, usually with but a single and common symbol below the horse, must for now remain an enigma.
