    Hello Everyone
I found this $5.00 Bill in my change the other day. When I looked at I had to do a double take it just didn't look right. It appears that the front of the bill was also printed on the back of it, but only in reverse. It's a mirror image and it covers the whole back side of the bill. The research I have done tells me that this happens when the sheet before it didn't make it into the printer for whatever reason, so the machine prints it's image on the drum. When the next sheet goes in the wet ink is then pressed onto the backside in reverse. Is this correct? How Rare is this? What's it worth? Anything else you can share would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

I think that since the image is mirrored, it is most likely that another $5 note of the same design was behind this one. The two got wet and the ink was transposed. Sorry. A nice example to hold onto, so as not to be taken if buying one in the future. Keep your eyes peeled!

Real error from the BEP. Ink was still wet when the sheets were stacked, causing this offset transfer error (I think that's what it's called). Nice catch.

I'm pretty sure that the image is reversed on the real errors.
Lets let someone else chime in here but I think it's real and would guess worth $40 - $60 in that condition.

This is an offset transfer error. The OPs description of how these occur is correct. It is not caused by wet ink when stacking sheets.

It's a complete Face-to-Back (F2B) Offset Error like this one:

I stand corrected! :) Thanks, guys!

Edit: Although, it seems to me that this kind of error could be duplicated.

Although you could loosen the inks with solvent and try to transfer it to another note, to replicate this effect you would need a note without serial numbers or overprint. These errors occur before the third printing.

As far as errors go, face to back offsets are somewhat common. They are still worth a premium however. The face to back is a little less rarer than back to face. That is because the face of the note is scrutinized more than the back during BEP QA.

It is easer to duplicate it with a scanner and a laser printer.

What you have is an indirect off set transfer in the late stage. When the indirect transfer, happens the later sheets printed will get lighter and lighter till the later printed ones will be back to normal. If the indirect off set is detected as soon as it happens, then the operator can stop the press and clean the blanket. They then can start up the press again, but it's would be cheaper to let it run out and just pull the defective sheets. That's what I did when I was an off set printer. The note is in bad shape, but a good find.;)

Thank You All Sooooo Much for the replies.

I love it here in this forum. Very Helpful and Welcoming!

I realize the bill is in quite circulated condition. That's actually what I find strange about it. This bill has been floating around for almost 20 yrs. and no one has ever noticed it. Shows how much attention to details we really pay to things in our busy lives.

    Kinda silly really.

A 20 yr. old $5.00 bill was the catalyst needed for me to "stop and smell the roses" as they say.
