I recently inherited my Dad's coin collection. In it, I found this unique double-stamped penny. I looked around the internet for more information on rarity or worth, but everything I find points to double-dies or offsets. This is not really a double-die or an offset coin, so I'm not sure what it would be categorized as. I'm a newbie when it come to coin collecting so I'm reaching out to the experts for some insight on this really cool penny. I'll probably hold onto this baby, but any idea of what it value might be? Thanks in advance...
you lucky dog! even if thats not worth much, its still a cool looking coin all together. i cant give you an estimate on value because im apparently always wrong.
It appears to be a Multiple Strike Flip Over. Check out this page for reference. This site says they are more rare and these guys would know. This site is a great reference site. http://error-ref.com/Mulitple_strikes_flip_over.html
Thanks Jay. That info led me to the fact it's also known as Obverse struck over reverse. Reading up on it right now..
I'm not that good identifying errors but it looks like a flipover double strike, second strike off-center.
That sounds spot on to me. From everything I have read that you post, you are pretty good at identifying everything. I know if I need help with a Lincoln, yours will be the first reply I'll be waiting on. You seem very knowledgeable.
Not unique in the intended sense, but still cool. Flip-over double struck with second strike about 60% or so off-center. If the date were present on the second strike, it would likely sell for substantially more, or so has been my experience.
The fact that it's a wheat error automatically makes it worth a substantial premium. Can't tell from the photos, but if it's in BU condition I'd guess it would go for $100-150 if sold raw.
Looks like a high AU coin, possibly low MS, but it is tough to tell from the photos. P.S. just for future reference, they are called cents, not pennies. Keep up the hunt!
