I want to do a registry set, it'd be a neat goal. I was looking at the type sets, can anyone tell me the difference between the basic type set (no gold) and the complete type set (no gold)?

  3. In sort, you would only need one variant of the seated design, the complete set you would need motto, no motto, arrows etc. for all type coins.

You can view the already existing public sets to give you an idea of the requirements. I started out with the complete Kennedy Halves with minor varieties, but after looking at it for a few days, it was just too daunting. So I retired that set and went to a basic one: all BU and proof issues.

This is what I'm looking for. I was looking for a set that had an example of each design but I didn't need varieties like type 1 and 2 ect. Just one Lincoln, one flying eagle, ect.

I registered with pcgs! my last challenge as most know was a half dollar type set, not registered. The basic design type set registry is my new endeavor, currently I'm ranking 222 out of 310 with 8 out of 40 coins complete.

  8. Awesome! Good luck. Try not to get wrapped up in the competition of it, you lose sight of what the hobby is about. Here is my set if you want to look. It's in progress, and I have no pics yet. So you can look at a lot of numbers. :D http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/publishedset.aspx?s=108402

Log Potato: you should consider uploading pics to your registry set. The ones you post here are great. You're probably just using the registry to organize your collection, but whenever I browse the sets, I'm always disappointed when there aren't images. Just a personal preference.

Nevermind - I just realized you said you didn't have pics yet. Sorry - long week.

Nice barbs bud. Yeah, I'll buy what's needed to fill my desired list and buy based on what appeals to me, those two things come first. Then I'll plug them in and how they effect my rank is just a side note.

  12. Thanks, JA. I would post all my pics I have taken of the coins and seller pics, but my OCD won't allow it. Maybe I'll do it for a day so you can roam through it. ;)

Yeah, that's basically what I did. I'm going to upload my own images as soon as my photography improves to the point where they're worth looking at.

Registry sets are fun. However, I find it hard to buy a coin that I don't like just to complete a set or series.

    Good luck on your set(s).

Do you mean from a design standpoint? If so I understand. I think it'll be fun though, even if not a fav, owning at least one of a particular design is a goal. As far as quality I'll wait till I find the perfect example before buying one. Quality over quantity is my name lol.

My collection is basically an everyman's set - I prefer toned coins in medium grades, so I'll never compete with the point chasers. Neither do I care to. I do hope to finish it someday, however.

If PCGS actually had an everyman's category for Kennedys, I'd be more in my league, but I suppose there are too many coins in MS to warrant such a category.

It might be easy for some people to fall into the trap of buying any coin to fill a hole, but album collectors have the same trap. The registry has actually had the opposite effect on me: I've passed on far many more coins than I've bought, because those coins just didn't suit my vision for the set.
