And that's an excellent reason. I once assembled a Dansco album of Peace Dollars, and the biggest challenge was finding well-struck coins.

Seriously a beautiful coin. Love peace dollars. Still been lazy to buy a 1921 & its been a dream coin of mine since I was a kid.

I'm thinking MS 63 too much going on the edge of the neck line. The last couple of 21's I've sent into NGC they have been brutal on, I hope they were kind to you. Nice coin, above average strike which is a bonus.

63 due to overdipping was my first thought.

Something about the coin just looked "off" in the photo.

I'd say it has a shot at 64. And I do agree that luster is totally different than low relief peace dollars. The low relief peace dollars have a luster that seems to start at the center and "Cartwheel" out while the 21s have a "rolling" luster. My favorite examples are the Lincoln Cents. Where a nice UNC 60s cent has "rolling" while modern day lincolns have a "cartwheel" effect.

Anyways, I see it is 63 and I believe it to be a strong 63.

Its good to see someone else is able to analyze the luster of a series correctly.

The word "luster" is subjective, so it can't really be analyzed - only interpreted.

Obviously our interpretations of luster differ greatly.

mumu, great shots! iGradeMS70, I like your pics too.

Does that make me indecisive or should I run for political office? :D

I do have to agree that showing both extreme detail and color/luster at same time can be very hard. I try and fail about once a week. Highly diffused lighting can show AMAZING detail, but when you do it to the extreme, it is a very bad way to show coins, since the coin does NOT look that way in hand. I should know, I've been doing some crazy diffused lighting recently.

Well its simple logic at the end of the day. For color you need even light coverage, for luster you need light contrast and for surface you need light to get out of the way as much as possible so it doesnt fill in those little crevaces(ie underexposing). Good look achieveing all 3 without witch craft.

Can anyone teach me what makes this pcgs 64 a higher grade than the NGC 63 I posted in the op? Thanks in advance.

I didnt realize ms70 was a 16 yr old kid. I would have overlooked the fact that he pet peeved me on the worst coin forum pet peeve i had and refrained from my tone but in any case, this is what an MS 63 looks like in my minds eye.

I think it has to do with if the grader had a good day, what they had for lunch, and how their family life is going.

As much as I want to hope otherwise, I dont think there is a more realistic answer than this.

I've always been told PCGC grades using higher standards than NGC. Not saying I believe this. Here it looks like NGC was tougher on the grade. - To me, the coins look like they should be the same grade.

If your "pet peeve" is hearing people's opinions, then why create this thread asking for people's opinions?

and please do enlighten me on how my age reflects on knowledge... not sure I fully understand how that's even a factor.

Keeping it from a 64... After a bit of looking, I'll say strike strength is the holdback. I'd love to see some pictures showing luster if you can get those though. I still say it is a strong 63 with a chance of grading up.
