I am working on a full set of American Silver Eagle Proof coins for my son (2.5 years old). So far I have the '86, 2010, 2011 and the 2012 2 coin set. How many of you have decided to collect a full set of Ase proof coins? Just wondering how popular these coins are with the fellow CT clan

Most everybody collects these. I know I have since 1986 but have culled my coins down to solely what the Dansco will hold which includes Proof, Uncirculated and Varieties.

Good Luck on your venture but might I suggest 2 of each. One set for your son and one set for yourself?

I look forward to each issue and I have purchased an annual (except 2009) proof American silver eagle directly from the US Mint since 1986. When the burnished uncirculated versions came out, I also purchased those varieties. The special sets in 2006, 2011 and 2012 have also been acquired. I was one of the surprisingly few who obtained the maximum five sets of the 2011 25th anniversary sets. I have not planned on selling these highly sought after sets for a profit.

In the future, I plan on purchasing the bullion versions after 1990 to compliment the collection. I already have the first five issued from 1986-1990. These are extremely popular coins, one of the finest designs in history and a modern way of obtaining a big beautiful proof coin at a modest price.

Big fan here. I've purchased them since 2000 (from the mint) with plans to purchase the earlier works sometime in the future. Alas, present considerations inhibit this endeavor...........

I'll echo Lee (19Lyds). Why not assemble a set for yourself too? You owe it to yourself to enjoy this pastime we call collecting, and all too many times the ones we assemble things for are ungrateful, uninterested and unappreciative. Not to say that your son is, though. I hope you can kindle the collecting spirit in him..........

I'm trying to do the exact same thing. I've been collecting for just a couple of months now. Bullion for the kids, proofs for me. So far I have the 1986, 1987, 1994, 1996, 2010, 2012, 2013 and the 2012 two coin set. I'm thinking the 2006 and 2011 sets are going to be hard to come by. Those I'm going to have to be patient on and try to get a decent deal on.

All I've got is the 2012-S. Don't they all look the same?

As a matter of fact, no. No they don't all look the same.

The bullion versions produced in 1986 have a differen finish than those produced in say 2001! 2001 looks different than what is produced today.

Some finishes are different within the exact same year of production?

So no, they don't all "look the same". They may have the same basic design with the exceptions of lettering styles, or device sizes, or even small insignificant nuances between coins but then, folks would actually have to LOOK at them beyond the .999 Fine Silver notation to notice such things.

Kinda like saying that since all Lincoln Wheat or Memorial cents "look the same", you really only need to collect one!?!?!

I had three sets going at one time, proofs from the mint, bullion and one proof set graded. I sold off two sets of them 2 years ago. I was investing too much in one type of collectable. I kept the graded set. Most are PR/PF70 Proofs. Sold the 1995W for a good profit. (It wasn't graded and had some milk spotting on it.) Several of the mint proofs were sold on this site to other CT collectors.

If it's an AR I don't see how that could be hard to do. e-Bay has graded 69 sets for $769 and 70 sets for $1380. Currently a nice AR sells for more than that.

A full set? The 1995-W is going to cost a lot.

the '06 set is about 220k and the '11 is 100k. the '06 went up more by% than the lower minted '11 set . go figure.

Man, don't be saying stuff like that. My experience is ASE collectors can get a might testy.

I had no idea the 95-W was so expensive, I dont think there are too many floating around that are raw, the ones I see on feebay are all slabbed and its very few of them
