I posted a group of Byzantine coins that were brought to me at a coin fair on Sunday earlier on this forum. At the same time I got a larger group of Roman base metal coins - also reportedly brought back by the soldier serving in North Africa during WW2. I have spent some time identifying those I could easily, so here are the ones I am less sure about - anyone want to shout out if there is anything unusual in this lot? I am particularly interested in the one top row second from left, which has Greek writing, and the one bottom right corner, which is almost a caricature portrait and a V on the reverse - may be Byzantine? For interest, the others that I have Id'ed include: a Volusian Ant, S9759 Claudius Gothicus, Quintillus, S11436 2x Constantine the Great (one with twin figures on reverse, the other with the under Licinius obverse), Delmatius, Constans (with very long neck) Magnentius 2x Constantius II with the text reverse Julian II Gratian and Flacilla! So a good spread! I have not the energy to scan them all, but if anyone wants to see any specifically, please ask and I will do my best.
Well I am disappointed only Ripley seems interested! I thought these were interesting! Anyway, here are the most interesting (in my view) of the others that I identified. Left to right, top to bottom: Volusian, Quintillus, Delmatius, Flacilla.
I can just imagine some Tommy wandering around the desert dodging tanks and Me-109's. Picking up these things during battle, to try to maintain his sanity.
Like all war zones 99.9% boredom and 0.1% sheer terror! Picking up coins in the dust helped to relieve the former.
Thanks Mat for the correction! I saw the FL, and persuaded myself that the rest read acilla, but I can see now it is probably Fl Helena. Thanks again.
I like the Constantius I VOT in the first pictures, certainly better than the 'usual suspects' on these coins. Cant help with the two your struggling with though, not a clue about the first, the second I'm positive I know but the old grey matter just wont give up the goods. Sure I IDed the same coin type on a different forum recently Will keep thinking.
Very nice group. The last one in the last row is indeed Byzantine, either Justin I or Justinian I. The third row first coin is a Valentinian III campgate. He's a pretty scarce ruler. I'd be interested if you're ever willing to let that one go, just sayin'
Not all of us spend all day online so it might be best to wait longer before writing us off. The Crispus dead center is a semi-rare coin but not in great shape so not a high dollar item. Maxentius upper right is Ostia mint and a keeper even though it could be in better condition. Bottom, second from the right is a barbarous radiate copying Tetricus I, Top second from left is interesting and a Provincial from an earlier period (Caracalla???) but not one of the common cities. All I read clearly is AVTK (Autocrator or Imperator). Row two, second from the left is a posthumous issue honoring Maximianus (?), I believe but, again, lacking in condition. Upper left is also Maximianus but early in his reign.
Paddy me boyo, I have not opined here as I like to see individual coins posted in order to ID and discuss properly. However, that being said, these coins look like an interesting lot. Most of the identifiable ones have been pointed out already. Good on ya. :thumb:
Thank you very much everyone for your help - much appreciated! Apologies to Doug for being a bit impatient - it was late evening here, I had had a glass or two of wine, and I was hoping for something back before I called it a night. (Hence the rather illiterate post as well!) I can spend time today between work labeling up all the ones I now know about.
Having sorted through those with a definite ID, and dropping a couple that are hopelessly worn, I am left with the four below still to get - they look good enough to find, and Doug has suggested the first one is possibly a provincial Caracalla, but I don't think anyone commented on the other 3. Any help much appreciated!
BTW - this is the Constans (I believe). Phoenix reverse, but the longest neck on the bust I have ever seen!
Second coin, top row, I think is: Rome RIC VII 110 Maximianus Herculius. AE3. 317-318 AD. Rome. Posthumous issue. DIVO MAXIMIANO SEN FORT IMP, veiled and laureate head right / MEMORIAE AETERNAE, eagle standing right, looking left, wings spread. Mintmark RP, RS, RT or RQ. RIC VII Rome 110.
