A Grail Coin is a coin that you've sought after for years. I owned a lesser grade of this same coin years ago. I sold it to help pay for college. I now have a newer and better version of this coin. Here's my new one... DRVSVS, son of TIBERIVS I bought it from Forum ancient coins. It set me back a pretty penny at over $300., but it was worth it!
Any chance of a slightley larger image? cant make out all the detail but what I can see looks great LOL De Orc :kewl:
Badger, that's a very nice coin. What is the denomination? Is it an As or Sestertius? I'm not familiar with that particular coin. It's well centered and the legends are very readable. You couldn't ask for much more!
my grail coin from France only took me 12 years to find..... and then....when it came in the mail that day....2 more came up for auction Ebay. i was like WTH.:headbang:
thank you. I really like the depth perception on it. it looks like it goes way back in there. I will eventual collect Belgian cathedral medals. they are spectacular for depth perception viewing.
Although I've had it for about a year now, this was my Grail coin: Caligula AR Denarius OBV: C CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR POT, bare head right REV: DIVVS AVG PATER PATRIAE, radiate head of Divus Augustus right Struck at Lugdunum 37-38 AD 3.5g, 18mm RIC I 10 I started my collection of Denarii of the the 12 Caesars in 1982. I finally completed it with the purchase of this coin in January 2012, 30years later.
Daaaaaaannnnngggg..... Well at the least I can tell you it wasn't 30 years wasted. Daaaaaannnngg, thats phat.
Thanks Anoob. It's a fairly rare denarius, and even though it is somewhat porous, the portraits are great.
My grail coins are the extremely rare Roman emperors and usurpers of the 5th century and pretty much anything post-Roman Germanic (except the more common Vandal issues - but I still enjoy them of course). Luckily I've managed to get one from each area so far: Ostrogothic Kingdom - Theodahad (reigned 534-536 AD), decanummium Obv: INVICT-A ROMA, Roma helmeted, facing right Rev: DN THEODAHATHVS REX within wreath, X below, Rome mint Western Roman Empire - Libius Severus (reigned 461-465 AD), nummus Obv: DN LIBIVS SEVERVS PF AVG Rev: Monogram of Ricimer in wreath, Rome mint
This is what I want, any year good condition. Santiago 8 reales. Pics from Heritage auctions. I might return with one in two weeks time. Have some serious cash saved up.
Besides what I want, I also found a grail coin that I was looking for since starting this hobby. The early 20th century 192- Chile 1 peso coins were minted in high numbers, but most that could see or find were in bad shape, cleaned or just fake. Then I found my precious, a mint state 1925 peso with beautiful cartwheel and slight gold toning. This one could be up there with best specimens. These were also a weak strike. I found the 1910, 1915, 1917 and 1922 in almost same condition.
Very nice coin Derick. I could see why you appreciate it so much. For "Grail" coins for me, there are two I dream about. One is a US coin, a chain cent AMERI.. It was the first die used to strike the first business strike coins in the US. My second is the tetradrachm minted "in the east", (I believe Antioch most likely), of Cleopatra VII and Antony. I love how it reads she is Queen, living goddess, etc, while he is a "successful general". Kinda shows who wore the pants in that relationship. I have seen both for sale, but getting the right combination of condition/price has eluded me so far. I am hoping one of these days I will stumble across the right match.
