Read it again, it states no such thing. That's just the popular interpretation but the legislation isn't perfectly clear on the matter. If Reagan gets a coin after Ford and the series ended then, no president will have be honored out of sequence. ("In sequence" does not necessarily mean the same thing as "consecutive." The numbers 1, 2, 4 are in sequence even though I skipped 3.)

I'll concede that most people interpret it the way you do, but that's not a 100% guarantee the Mint will also do so. Until the time comes any such declaration is just speculation and opinion.

In my experience the closer one is to death the less macabre it seems to contemplate the inevitable. I can tell you that the loved ones I've known who were near death, they dreaded dying more than the actual death, especially since they were in pain and were actually looking forward to the final release, and had faith that they were headed for a better place.

But you probably think I'm "sick" or "evil" for even discussing such a thing, so whatever, live in denial if you so choose. I'm sure if you never contemplate or discuss death you'll just live forever.

 

Denial..yeah, that would be me. My husband died un my arms, as I waited and watched. Yep, that's denial.

‘‘(E) LIMITATION IN SERIES TO DECEASED PRESIDENTS.— No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President. ‘‘(3) ISSUANCE OF COINS COMMEMORATING PRESIDENTS.— ‘‘(A) ORDER OF ISSUANCE.—The coins issued under this subsection commemorating Presidents of the United States shall be issued in the order of the period of service of each President, beginning with President George Washington.

-ignoring all the riffraff about the intentions or interpretation of the OP's question- I'll cut to CJay's post on the "law". I have to deal with reading rules and regs almost every day on my job. Ironically today was a day that had me questioning words, phrases, context and interpretation. That said, if I read Part A on Order of Issuance just as it is, that would lead me to think that it's absolutely possible to have a Reagan coin and skip Carter if he has not passed as of yet. Seems pretty straight forward to me... Thoughts?

 

I would say that you are probably correct and it does allow to skip Carter. The primary eliminating factor is the 2 years post mortum requirement, which also sets the end of the series. I personally think it would be ashamed not to honor Carter, and hope that congress will do so at the appropiate time.

 

I value any person's life over my esoteric hobbies.

 

I didn't check if Millard Fillmore was gone when I bought some of his dollars.

I thought that there was a drop dead date when the series is supposed to end. I can't remember however if the date was effective 2017 or when. Anybody know?

 

All the more reason to live each day as if it were your last. Life is precious and fragile and one never really knows how much time they have left.......

 

What a weird thread! Going from death pools to serious sentiments in a couple quick pages, but still no one touched on the real heart of the matter.... Zombies. And whether or not a zombie Carter would be allowed on said coin.

I think that longevity often runs in families, President Carters father died pretty young (58) while his mother lived until age 85. I think that he is taking more after his mother than his father.

 

Why do some of you want Jimmy Carter dead?
When the Pres $ series ends, you'll have a complete set no matter who has or hasn't been put on a coin.
Although a good reason is just to keep you all from getting a Reagan Dollar, but not the only one, I wish Jimmy Carter at least another 10 years.

 

An interesting thread. I don't really care for the presidential dollars and don't have any except for what comes in the proof sets, but I will buy a crate (or whatever the largest amount the mint will sell) when the EISENHOWER dollar comes out. Having said that and after reflecting on this thread I have realized three things:

1. The 'golden dollars' are really hideous. There are some nice designs here and there, but overall - FAIL.
2. Kasia - that's an awesome avatar

How long do you have to be "undead" to be on a coin, 2 years? If you come across some really cool rotters, how do you tell the difference between natural and artificial rotting.
