This group of Indian Cents, Nickels and Dimes were picked up for £18. I imagine I did OK but
selling on e-bay means I need a signature which makes the postage expensive to sell coins
individually. Will ponder on it. Just got these about an hour ago and no, I know little about
US coins but enough to know it wasn't a loss.

You did alright. Not sure if it'd be worth putting on ebay though.

Buffalo nickels are not very valuable unless you have a three legged one, and the indian heads you have are all common dates, however the 1909 indian head is now valued at 15 dollars. The 1909 S is valued at 550 dollars and the 1908 S is just as valuable. How many 1909 indian head pennies did you get? And are any the S type?

In my experience, common, circulated 1909 IHC will sell for about half of retail price unless they're at least a high XF. To add to frankstony's post, there are more than just 1 valuable date in Buffalo nickels...we'd love to know what year/mm combinations you have. Also, check the obverse for the 2 feathers varieties and the reverse for those 3 legged varieties. But early dates with mint marks can be especially valuable, like a 1913 S Type 2.

I guess if I get an ANA number then I could put that under my name and KABLAM!!! I am an expert on indian heads.

I never proclaimed myself an expert...just threw in my two cents. I've probably sold about 25 circ 1909 IHC on eBay and been disappointed by the final sales amount every time - about half what the book says... That's all...probably would be better if sold locally. Plus, the information you gave marbury was incorrect - there are plenty of valuable dates in the highly collected Buffalo Nickel series. No need to start an argument...just trying to help out the OP.

Who's arguing thats what we are on here for. We agree to disagree. I see more value in her indian heads then in her nickels. Sorry, you are a nickel guy and I am a collector.

I feel like I see two Mercury dimes poking out under that pile of Buffs...what dates are they? That's a few bucks in melt value any way...

Just for kicks, Brit. Could you post the dates of the indian heads also? I'll bet she has more money in indians then buffalos. How bout it artist.... make a little bet?

Also, the 1908 S is considerably less than the 1909 S, generally costing around $60 in G/VG condition.

Try putting it up on here before eBay. I know there would be many collectors seeking it (myself included :D).

Well, we know what the dates on most of the IHC are...and they appear to be common circulated dates, which you can buy in the US for...50 cents each to $1 each? However, I do admit I don't know the going rate of these in the UK...although I'd be interested to find that out!

And, half of the lot is Buffalo Nickels and what looks like a Mercury Dime...so to ignore that part might be to ignore the most valuable coins in the lot. I'm just adding that there are at least 15 dates of Buffalo Nickels that start at $40 or more in G4 condition...having at least one would increase the "score factor" of this purchase, especially when you add the melt value of that Merc.

Well, honestly, there's no need to turn it into a competition. I think it's fun enough to help someone out without having to be the "winner." Would like to know the dates/mm of the extra coins that aren't labeled...

And I agree, there would be more value posting the coins for sale here or locally than in eBay.

Just looked in the 2012 Harper price guide and it looks like artist is right. The nickels are off the hook, looks like everything from 21 back are going for around 30-600 dollars in G-4

You have to agree artist, that buffalos are horrible for PMD

    So, we've got the following:

*13 common IHC dates, would need to see condition to determine if they're worth more than $1 each
*2 IHC dates we can't see, could be anything...but at minimum, let's say $1 each
*2 Mercury Dimes, at LEAST $2.07 each in melt value
*10 Buffalo Nickels, one of which looks like it's a Type 1 (a bit hard to tell, but I think it's there) and if it has a mint mark it's worth the purchase price of the entire lot (retail value)

So, I think, at the very least, this was a decent deal. More specific information is needed to find out if it was a great deal... If the OP's plan was to keep them for enjoyment, then I think it's already a success, because it wasn't a bad deal. If it was to re-sell...then more info is needed.

Well, I admit that the ones shown here don't look mint fresh...but they don't look as bad as I've seen. I had a 1914 D that I sent in to NGC to get authenticated...came back as "genuine, ungradeable due to environmental damage." Think it sold for less than $20 on eBay. But that sucker was brown and green...lol

And you know, I HATE the design of the Morgan dollar (I know, everyone punch me...lol) but I still would look them up if there were some in a lot...because I've found an 1895 P in XF in my auctioneer friend's coins before. Someone sold it to him for less than melt...and I think I sold it for him for $800-900? But you were right about the 1937 D 3-legged...I found one of THOSE too in his stuff, so he probably paid 50 cents for it? He ended up selling it at auction for around $600 after it came back from NGC as an XF45...although he forgot to add my absentee bids in or he would have made a lot closer to the retail price for it.

I'm not saying one has to be an expert in all US coin series...just to know enough when to look up certain coins...because a coin you might not collect could end up paying for a BUNCH of coins you DO collect. :)

Nice, I had a few buffalo nickels at one time but they just have that smashed up look. Is that something to do with the way they were made?
