To me it appears to be a problem-free coin that's simply worn down to Good, with a decent color. If you were in the market for an inexpensive (under $100) Octavian bronze, would this coin tickle your fancy, or is it possible to do better in that range?
Could be interested if I were in the market for an under 10$ coin... A [very] worn, not so popular type :flirty0wink:
I'm a fan of more legends but I suspect this is about what you get for under $100. Lifetime portrait bronzes of Augustus are not common. You see more of the issues for Divus Augustus.
Do the research and see which of us is right. Find an identifiable $10 Imperial lifetime Augustus portrait. Find a $50 one in any grade. I did find one better for $113 on VCoins so maybe this is high at $100 but it is not a $10 coin.
No, I didn't think so. The seller wants $70. I didn't think that was too bad, considering what's available in the price range: a lot of pitted, corroded, sorry excuses for coins. But I wanted to see what you gurus had to say.
Do a little search on munzeo... unless you're allergic to ebay I'm sure you could do better for that price:yes: Not sure I would even pay 10$, but I'm not in the market for this type of coin...
In fact my best Augustus portrait 'as' did cost less than $70. It is not bad if you can overlook its little problem.
I think I fall somewhere in the middle, but closer to Dionysos. I would say a $20-$40 coin which I think you could do better. I'm not basing this on any research, just opinion and we all have our opinions.
Here's one currently for sale (around 100$ with shipping) that look much better (to my eyes at least ld-guy-smile... Main "problem" being the green spots on the obv. (benign or malignant :scratch.
Maybe at one time you could get that at 10 but IMO thats a bit higher price coin these days. Oh the good old days when I could get very nice coins with sharp protraits (not LRB) for a song...
You know, I have no aesthetic objection to a halved coin with detail like that. I would take that piece any day of the week over a corroded, ugly whole coin. That's a marvelous piece.
I think $70 might be a little on the high side based on overall condition I wouldn't go much over $50.
The original coin posted is too worn to be worth that much. The other example posted is much better and if I was to choose I would rather put in the extra money for a nicer one.
Alright, one of my specialties I think 10-20 would be fine too. Anything over 35 it not worth unless you "need it."
