I recently finished the p/d state quarters in a dansco and I love it. I also am doing the atb quarters and give their beauty of being parks I went the proof route. Now normally I hate proofs sense they come in kind of a gimmicky package. And they aren't as nicely displayable as in an album...without cracking them that is....not to mention you really risk messing with the proof was if you take them raw. So how do y'all store/display/show proofs that are in sets like this? Keeping them as is is good and most will say keep as is but you can't argue they are kind of funny to display. Do many of you collect then "cracked out" and how do you deal with keeping the quality intact since they aren't encased anymore.
I understand the desire to display the coins all together in an album format. However, I do not do that myself. I try to keep the coins in the government issued holders and store them completely intact in a cool stable environment. I don't view those proof sets very often. Here is a photo depicting how I have stored the government packaged silver proof sets from 1955 to 1964. The Dansco album is designed to hold 10 mint sets. All the rest are stored in their government packaging within large plastic containers from the Dollar Store.
I am a big fan of keeping those flatpacks in their original packaging. I don't know why, maybe they will become more valuable with the packaging since so many get cracked out. But then packaging can be faked/redone? I don't know. I just like the way they look in the OGP. Those Whitman Folders are now on my Want/Need list as of ... right ... now!
If there still sealed but the envelop has been opened Collect89 show a great way to do it:thumb:. but also some new frame that have no PVC I think the called Window Frames for Mint + Proof sets.they suspend the coin what air there no holder ring around them.Amos has them.the maker of the the name I can't recall.
I'll have to look into the dansco mint set albums....When you place them in a dasnco do they hold the whole holder or is it just the plastic insert within the hard plastic case? (as I noticed with the 2010 I cracked) As for the keeping them as is because there is something nice about have it government set with Coa/ect. I'm still on the fence about doing a raw/Danso set. For those that do go the crack route, do you do it yourself or buy then individually cracked on eBay, eBay seems to sell a lot already cracked? And how do you deal with making sure they are still "perfect" when cracked. Finally, I played with one set and cracked it (I'll replace it) and it is pretty easy to do without damage. It also seems like every set I get had a speck or dust here or there that makes me want to crack and fix it or buy a new set lol. Dust on a mirror finish is annoying. Im kind of up in the air, there is something about gov issue (like y'all said) and yet there is also something about raw/dansco look. Thanks all for your insight on cracked vs original.
A reputable dealer will sell you proof coins that have been properly handled - or not handled as it were. I recommend Dave's Collectible Coins - he's got an abundance of modern issues. I have a set of silver proof sets in ogp and I buy certified examples of silver & satin state quarters and AtB’s. Beware of raw proofs & satins on eBay, I’ve bought them and received mostly junk/impaired coins that are not certifiable or low grade.
Do the dansco hold say the atb proof sets. Would you have to take them out of the hard plastic and just place the insert in the dansco or will the whole thing fit, hard plastic and all fit?
I don't know. I have only used the Dansco for holding the mint packaging from 1955 to 1964. You could call Dansco & ask them for more information.
