I have been working on my photography and took some pics of my latest additions. Used a 50mm 1/8 macro with OTT light and shoe box diffuser. http://www.cointalk.com/members/derick/albums/mypics/
I found this shoe box made from rigid platic material with similar diffusing properties than a cheap shower curtain. So, I place the coin inside the box, with the box slightly lifted to the same height as a normal small bed lamp. A place a lamp at each of the four sides using broad spectrum bulbs or OTT. Using a tripod, I take a pic from above. At the moment my restriction is on sharpness with the 50 mm macro at minimum macro distance of about 25 cm. If one would use a 100 mm macro, the pics would be outstanding. I use distance of the lamps to the box to play with colour and exposure. I take the photo on a 18% grey background. I use lightroom software to improve the sharpness. My next birthday gift is a 100 mm macro.
I started looking at this because posted many coins with following comments about it being cleaned and.... I once posted a rare coin bought form HA graded MS 64 and got a problem coin comment back due to bad photo. One can get away with some focus or sharpness issues, but the main idea is to get a photo that looks like the coin. You can only get that through diffused sunlight or OTT bulbs. I have tried it all!
That's a great reverse ice-man. And fairly large and heavy. Good acquisition! :thumb: I was wondering. Since it is the policy of CT to keep World and Ancients together (fine by me), what about splitting out this thread to "Newest Foreign Acquisition" and another "Newest Ancient Acquisition"? Just thinking out loud here. Don't anyone get upset with me.
These are my newest aquisitions from the last month or so. I did okay on some of them and not too good on a couple. I've started buying only foreign silver coins, not sure why i just like them. the best one is the 1925 f 3 reichsmark.
