1923 S SLQ Guess The Grade

While I was hoping for a 64 on this coin PCGS only felt it worthy of an MS63. I'll probably send it to CAC.

I'm not mad at all. This is still a monster coin.

 

Since most of us guess higher than that (apparently including yourself), could you try to explain what we have been missing.

 

I can't prove this, but my feeling is that obviously dipped coins are not getting grades above MS63.

 

Would not amaze me, but Matt should be able to see that. However, if it was dipped (obviously), there should be some luster impairment and I am not seeing that.

 

No, It was definitely dipped. I executed a proper dip before submitting this coin to PCGS. I however haven't noticed PCGS dogging dipped coins. I routinely get MS65 and 66 dollars back that I properly dip.

 

Assuming that you are saying it was not improperly dipped, we are back to my original question. Why only a 63?

 

If this were almost any other date it would be a lock MS64. I think this coin was probably a victim of market grading in my opinion.

 

But Matt, Morgan & Peace Dollars can be found blast white without being dipped so I don't think they would face the same level of scrutiny as a bright white SLQ which are almost always the result of dipping. Don't get me wrong, I am not criticizing your dipping skills, just saying that I have not seen any blast white coins getting grades above MS63 over the last few months. We should remember that my opinion on this matter is based on a very small sample size based mostly on Barber coinage.

 

I think it looks properly graded at 63 if the images are accurate. I reiterate my original comments regarding the scattered marks, etc.

 

That could very well be true. I wish I however has a before of this coin. It has developed some pretty ugly toning in the album...
