I cant afford medieval coins much but this one was cheap enough to add to my coin collection. Franche-Comté, Archeveche de BESANCON, ANONYMOUS ( 1180-1225 A.D. ) Denier O: P THO M[A]RTIR, hand blessing. R: + BISVNTVM, cross pattée 17mm 0.7g
One question about your cataloging - you say "Comté Archeveche." Which is it? A county or an archbishophric?
I think it would be both because the archbishop was a prince bishop of the HRE. So the rulers were both Prince Electors and Archbishops. It was a free imperial city and the principle city of what would later be termed the Franche-Comte' (Free County).
Agreed; "Franche-Comté" could in this context simply be a modern classification. Today's France has 22 régions in Europe, and Franche-Comté is one of them, with Besançon being the capital. Here is a similar coin ... Christian
I have had this one since the 1960's: France Silver Denier Ferri III of Lorraine (1251-1303) 20mm 3.16gm I think that I paid $1 for it then.
In willieboyd2's post? Looks good here. Try this direct link: http://www.brianrxm.com/posts/post_france_denier_ferri3.jpg Christian
