Aside from the completeness aspect of finishing our albums, I doubt the general public and coin collectors would really miss these if this bill ever came to fruition, which I doubt it would.
I will be extremely upset if this happens. As a historian and collector this has been a very neat collection, having a coin representation and history of all our pres...to not be able to complete it would be very upsetting.
I too would be disappointed if this happened. I have the full collection so far in PF69 slabs and am aiming to finish the set...
Good to know, so we're going to skip Carter unless he passes soon, then do Reagan, and that's it for a while I would think. Then what, probably a special one along side the Sac. two years after a president passes.
The circulation coins made money for the Government too. Thanks to the Senators previous bill the government lost around $400 million this year that the mint wasn't able to turn over to the General Fund as they had in previous years. (In other words the Senators bill to save the government money and to save the $3 million+ that the new storage facility would cost, actually ended up reducing the government income by $400 MILLION.) And currently the series ends at Ford Unless Carter dies before the middle of next year that will be where it ends. If he does die then it extends through Reagan. And once it is over it is over. It would require new legislation to issue any more coins after it ends in order to honor any further Presidents that die. The law as currently written is unclear on whether or not a living president can skipped over to get to a dead one. It could be interpreted either way. The Mint has taken the stance that they can't be skipped and their listing of issue dates ends with Ford. It did end with Nixon until Ford died. If Carter does die there is a fairly good chance that Bush will probably become eligible as well. Both are the same age with Bush a little older, and Bush has not been in good health recently.
Probably because they cost less than face value to produce. On the other hand, they could just make some other coin that actually gets used, that would save the warehouse cost. I think they should continue to produce them in small quantities for collectors but raise the prices.
The Canadian general public didn't want one dollar coins either. If you force it on them, they will come to accept it.
You know what is sad? Its how far ahead of the game this country COULD have been. Think about it, we were going to introduce a gold colored, multi sided dollar coin and withdraw the $1 note in 1979 until the vending machine and currency paper lobbyists got ahold of the politicians. Our nation can come up with some really good ideas, but our system of allowing these sleazy, self serving lobbyists to be able to derail such good plans completely ruins them.
I hope those would only be quarters, since I am a pretty good shot, (good enough to hit a quarter), and wouldn't want to be wasting so much money on the range.
They still make business strike presidential dollars, the bank will no longer have them, that's all ! i made 5,000.00 dollars of a ms-67 Zachary Taylor, and it wasn't a first strike, or first day of issue ! It was graded by pcgs, and the offer still stands from my customer, if i find any pcgs regular graded presidential dollars at this grade, i can sell them to him for 5,000.00 dollars, and that's no lie ! if you need the coin number of the one i sold, and graded too, let me no, i can show that to you ! i have an open account with pcgs, and can get the invoice for that coin !
sodude, he won't buy anything but regular graded ones, and thoses are very hard to find, the one i sold him was 1 of 1 none finer, the only one graded at ms-67 ! he just sent me an email two days ago, and asked if i found anymore, i wish it was that easy, that's for sure !
That is simply not true. The general public ONLY cares that what they receive in change................ can be spent for a dollar. MERCHANTS don't care for one dollar coins since they are bulkier and cost more to order. As such, they continue to order the bills for dispursement. I get REAL tired of folks telling me that I don't care for one dollar coins since I know that to NOT be true.
