I am just happy to see some excitement in ancients around here. We were beginning to think we were a bunch of weird old guys.

I guess I'm just weird then.

Would you rather not have exciting, titillating conversation/discussion about your wonderful collection of Ancients? I dunno. For me there is no one in my family or close set of friends that are the least bit interested in my collection. I get the "oh, that's nice" condescending comment meaning "this guy is nuts" comment. On a discussion board like this I find others with the same interests and we can all show off our coins to people who appreciate them. Maybe it's me that's weird, but I like it here and I like the excitement I feel from many of the posts.

Sorry, typing on a tablet leads to extra brevity in my posts. I was more referring to how I'm not old! The communities for ancient coin collectors on the internet has helped the hobby (and the market) immeasurably. I know I wouldn't be where I am today without it.

I too don't really have any family or friends who are interested, outside of the web. My family humors me from time to time, but I always feel awkward talking about it. It's like in Office Space - "I don't like to talk about my flare..." Of course, my area of interest is so obscure that even most ancient collectors steer clear. :)

Oh, and I agree 100% with your comments regarding the fact we have nobody to show-off and/or talk coin-smack with in our "real, physical" lives .... my friends humour me once in a while if I try to show-off one of my new coins, but I can tell that they think it's a total waste of cash!!

=> and I really try my hardest to tell my wife the truth, but at times I tend to down-play my coin collecting "and" how much cash is being spent on my cute little habit!!

    ;)

Sorry. I miss understood. BTW, I hate working on my tablet as well. :foot-mouth:

I absolutely LOVE it for reviewing auctions and reading. Massive numismatic pdf library + tablet + Dropbox = learning.

Typing *almost* works. In portrait mode it's just too wide for me to use thumbs, like on a phone. Landscape mode hides too much of the screen.

  15. My name is Mike. I'm 23 years old and live in St George Ut. I'm a Law/Fire/EMS dispatcher. I go by Tiberius in most of my forums. I've been collecting coins for 18 years; ancients for 5 years. My first was a trajan decius ant from a coin shop in Carlsbad, CA. It was the only silver one I could afford. After that I was hooked. I collect a broad range of Ancients. Basically, anything that predates the Late Roman Era. Currently, I am working on a biblical series. I may have bitten off more than I can chew. I have several thousand invested and have several thousand to go.

I have several 100 US coins that if anyone was willing to trade comparably for ancients, I would be willing.

Ides Of March stated it best when describing the hooks that drive ancient collectors. Even when trying to explain that reasoning to US Collectors; I still get a blank look. I didn't think it was too hard to understand, but it's something that is hard to describe unless you have felt the weight of a tetradrachm. I have found myself to be completely alone with my hobby amongst my family and friends. (it even feels like i'm alone in my county.) The only coin shop we have in the county has a few late roman constantines. Which of course, are coupled with a ridiculous asking price. Being 23 years old is typically rare of a serious ancient coin collector. It seemed nearly inevitable to find myself entangled in such a hobby with my natural interest in biblical and ancient history. I would eventually like to get out of the state to find a reputable school to get a degree at in antiquities. But, that would be in the distant future. Time and money does not permit at this time.

I would also like to add that looking at what Ides of March has obtained in the same time frame as I, depresses me. :(

Back at ya, my friend! :high5: Great to see you again!
This place looks like it will be fun--but I have a lot of smileys to learn! :bangg:

As for ancients being "weird"--I think of them as the closest to classical art I'll ever collect.
Since nearly all Greek statues are melted down, including the Zeus at Olympia pictured on many Alexander the Great coins, our coins are some of the few Greek treasures left.

I like that some of our coins are "snapshots" of actual objects too.

    Coming out of the closet….

Well, let me say that I don’t collect coins. I do enjoy Ancient Roman history, however. And I do "accumulate" pieces of history.

In order to better appreciate Ancient Rome (from daily life to macroeconomics and from mythology to military history), one needs to have at least a rudimentary understanding of numismatics.

I appreciate Coin Talk because of the willingness of experts here to share their insights and knowledge with relative coin novices like me. I also appreciate Ancient collectors’ eagerness to appreciate a coin’s beauty and history without an obsession with grade or price.

I have been writing and reading about Ancient Rome since last century. Most of my recent efforts can be found at this non-numismatic site. (One has to be logged in to see the images.):

    http://www.unrv.com/

Many well-known authors and scholars participate at the above site. (Most of the members, however, are similar to me—just amateurs enthusiastic about Ancient Roman history.)

I am frequently asked questions about coins at UNRV so I come to Coin Talk for the answers. (Anyone interested in non-numismatic discussions about Ancient Rome can join us at UNRV.com. We are still looking for an Ancient coin advisor.)

So here is something for Valentine's Day lovers everwhere:

Very nice coins. Those Plautilla coins ain't cheap, I know. I was looking at a few of them last night when I was trying to figure out affordable coins for my Roman Imperial collection. She sure has a lot of different hairstyles. lol
